OC advices for a newbie, what kind of memory for OC'ing? a good pc health/status monitor software?

Current set-up:

Gigabyte K8NXP-9
Opteron 170 2ghz
Some old cl2,5 1gb (2x 512) pc3200 ram
Ati AIW X1800XL
Win XP Pro

I'd like to oc my computer to 2,4-2,5ghz.

Could someoen point some important issues to keep in mind while experimenting.
a brief explanation(or link to a goos site) about how different speeds/multipliers etc. affect each other.

I guess my ddr needs to be upgraded, is pc3200 ok or shoul I go for higher?
A brief explanation for why higher than pc3200 would be higly appreciated.

What would be good (small, runs unnoticed in the background etc.) PC monitorin program to keep and eye on temps etc.
