OC 970 w/12gb. Do I get 3xgb or 6x2 kit?

Ive aquired a 970 for quite cheap and now im trying to build out my rendering beast. I need 12gb, but Id also like to OC to 3.6 or somewhere in there.

Right now this 6x2 kit is insanely cheap @ $180 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145235

But would this 3x4 kit yield better results? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233146

My hope would be that I could get another 3x4 kit when the price drops and go 24gb (that would be best for my needs)

but that 6x2 kit is so cheap, maybe i could resell it.

I don't think you would be able to sell and not lose money (unless you know something I don't)

I, along with a number of other people, have had trouble getting the XMS series to run at their advertised speed, even when feeding them more voltage than specified. Plus most articles that dig into the impact memory speed and latency have in real world applications usually show about 2-4% (if any) (reference: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2792/6 and also a number of articles on Tom's Hardware), I say keep your money in your pocket instead of spending it on flashy memory.

If you haven't already spec'd an SSD for this system, or already have one, I would suggest spending your money there. (you probably know where to get a pretty good deal on one of those :sneaky🙂 This will make a real improvement, unlike grasping for a few percent here and there with memory and bleeding edge overclocks (nothing wrong with bumping it a few MHZ, but when it gets to spending an extra $100 on cooling to get that extra 100MHZ, it gets to be a bit silly)

I would definitely go with the 3 x 4GB.

on the server side you lose 33% per channel unpopulated. i guess it does sideways and 2-deep interleaving to give maximum performance with 6 chips per socket.

I wonder what is different about the consumer cpu's?
