So I was checking my email today when I came across an email supposedly from Citibank. The text of the messege read as follows:

Dear Citibank Member,

This email was sent by the Citibank server to verify your email address. You must complete this process by clicking on the link below and entering in the small window your Citibank ATM/Debit Card number and PIN that you use on ATM. This is done for your protection... because some of our members no longer have acess to their email addresses and we must verify it.

To veryify your e-mail address and access your bank account, click on the link below:

www.citibank.com/?H1mQ2of5KCWAeq16eqGwb1fc4whnbxibIcZJ7n3JmWuY6DxAKT6f17.....

I left the rest of the link off so no one would actully click on it. What's funny is that the text itself looks like it was written in MS Paint, saved as a poor quality JPG file, then cut and pasted onto the body of the email.

The email came from RoweSmoot.service-center@citi.com. I'm going to call Citibank to let them know that someone is sending out email scams and trying to post as Citibank.

Has anyone else gotten this email?

I get this or a version of it at least twice a week.

My question is why is Citibank the only bank this scam uses?

Citibank/Citigroup is the largest financial services provider in the world. Yearly revenue of ~90 billion if I'm not mistaken.
