obtaining new IP addy?

I hope that I can get an answer here. I made the mistake of going over to Yahoo chat computer lobby.....nothing but a circus there.

My question is, how do I go about getting a new ip address? I've tried going through winipcfg(release, renew), still grabs the same ip addy. I tried releasing the ip and restarting the machine thinking it will have to go grab a different one, still grabs the same ip address. I've tried specifying an IP addy, not successful.
I'm on a network. What does anyone suggest I do? 🙂

From where is the machine obtaining the IP address? Router? Server? Setup as DHCP? What subnet and mask is being assigned?

If it is coming from a server, perhaps the Admin has configured it narrowly enough that the addresses cannot be changed on stations. Or, in the case of a router, perhaps the maximum allocated addresses has been reached, so there are no new ones to assign.

Is this your network, work network, what? If work network, why do you want to change the IP address?

Server. Not DHCP, it is Static. It is not as though there are no new ip#s available. Work network. I want to change my ip addy for personal reasons(harrassment).....don't care to go into it here. I'm trying to see if there is a way of doing it without going to the administrator with my problem. Thanks for your help.

It is most likely configured so that only the Admin can change it from the server.

If you are having problems with a co-worker, changing the IP address isn't going to do you any good. You'd still be on the network. Unless you're assigned WAN addresses and the harrassment is coming from the outside?
