Obtaining a business license

I am starting a website where I will be charging members a monthly subscription fee. Since I am going to use an eMerchant to process the credit cards, I have to have a business license (probably other reasons as well).

How do I obtain a business license? I found a link through the SBA to an application for my state, but I'm not sure if that's what I need to do or not.

Any advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

All I had to do was head to the office of the commissioners of the sinking fund, fill out an application et voila! Tax ID!

At least that's what I think I did...it's been YEARS so I've forgotten the details.

Just google "how to start a business"

Since you're in Texas, start here

Where you live has the most bearing of where you obtain your license(s) to do business. In CA. You would need a basic License from the City where you live. This allows them to have appropriate business in the properly zoned area. Depending on the type of business being done, you may need County Permits.
THEN, if you're selling a tangible item, or buying items at wholesale, assembling them into another item and then selling that item, you will need a SALES TAX number from The State Franchise Board. This puts you at the scrutiny of the Sales Tax collectors and they are very good at their job, for that is how California pays for all the BS we pay for.....ooops inner dialoge, sorry.....
