Obscenely slow network printing

I've got a PIII gHz WinME (ouch, i know!) and a 1600+ WinXP. The ME machine has an HP Deskjet 970Cse. When I print to it from the XP comp, it can take up to 15 minutes for the printer to even start moving, and most of that time is spent waiting for the various print options windows to be displayed. What is up with this? I've checked my network speed - close to the 100mbps possible (94, to be exact). Oh, and the setup is

HP970Cse
/
ME machine
/
cable - ROUTER
\
XP machine

Any help would be appreciated!

In general Windows boxes suck as print servers. The fact that you have your printer on a Windows ME box probably doesn't help at all. Try moving the printer to the XP machine and see it that helps things along.

If that isn't a viable option get a real (standalone) print server.

at work, we have 4 computers hooked up to a 10/100 switch... the laser printer is hooked up to my comp... printing is nearly instantaneous... unless i have photoshop, outlook, ie x 6, etc open and my ram is lacking. if that's the case you would understandably have delays in printing...
