I've read that currently, Oblivion is the most demanding game available right now, taking over from F.E.A.R.

I'm in the upgrade process now but what I want to know is...

With my current AGP 8x 6600GT (supported), and hopefully a Pentium D 805 to come soon..
will i be able to play Oblivion ?

805 isnt fast at all, then again that 6600GT isnt the fastest either. You should try OCing that 805 to atleast 3ghz and hopefully you can play at 12x10 or 10x7 with a few eye candies turned on.

My guess is 1024x768 with low-medium settings if you want plenty playable in towns/dungeons. Even with those settings outside it should be playable but with some slow down.

Never played on a 6600gt so you might have to go as low as 800x600.

Look, a 6600GT is faster than a 9800XT right? Well my 9800XT plays oblivion pretty well. The 256mb of vram does help a lot though, since I can use Large textures with it. You might have to turn it down to medium though.

At 1024x768, my 9800XT could have playable FPS with Large Textures, all the distant stuff turned on, and some of the viewing distance things not all the way up. I even got to use Bloom.

BTW, thats with a XP 2800+ (no OC).

Now that system is my parents system (who actually do play Oblivion).

ouch...i really didn't expect much eye candy but at a glance 1024x768 does look a lot better than 800x600.
my current cpu is a socket a sempron 2200 @ 1.5 oc'd to 2500 @ 1.8....i have to run titan quest with everything on low at 10x7.
however i have AA turned on so it still looks kinda smooth...lol.

For reference, my brother played it on his P4/2.6GHz, 1GB DDR400, 9700 Pro 128MB AGP, 80GB 7200RPM SATA HD at 800x600 with everything on medium. Game ran smooth as silk, except the occasional hiccup when the screen was flooded with enemies.

I ran it on 2 systems: P4/3.0GHz, 2GB DDR533, 6800 GS 256MB PCI-E, 80GB 7200 RPM SATA HD and a dual core 1.83GHz, 2GB DDR667, 7900 GS 256MB PCI-E, 60GB 7200 RPM SATA HD -- both systems set at 1280x1024, all settings on high with HDR enabled. Framerates in the 40s typically according to Fraps.

Not really.
It is actually a little more feature rich, but in terms of sheer, raw processing power its a little slower.
In game benchmarks can show you that. So can the programs from Futuremark, but so many people dont like them I stopped suggesting that.

Having said all that, the card can probably play the game but with all the effects down to minimum. If you find you have power to spare try upping the sliders a little bit.

You know what? I take it back. Both of those cards were from the era when Nvidia handled OpenGL better and ATI handled Direct3D better. So its may be that the 9800 is better with Oblivion simply because of that.

EDIT: I was right. The Radeon gets better performance only in the Direct3D games.
Thats a pain in the butt. You have to decide which games you want to play fast in order to make a selection.

I have an A64 3200+/gig of RAM/X800 XL and can't play the game smoothly 100% of the time at 12x10. I can however max all graphical settings at 10x7. That may be able to help you judge some.

Doesn't kill my new Tank Panther V :( its got awesome processing power with Dual GPU setup to make the Ultimate Destructive Machine. It has a 65nm GUN powered by an Overclocked Conore E6600 @ 3.4GHZ. It can blow an AMD T34 (fx62) as far as 2000 meters away. It consume way less power and is really fast in tough terrain.

Runs okay in my aging A64 3200+ with a 7800gs (AGP) and 1GB of RAM at 1280x1024, mid-high settings, but my PC struggles in thick forests outdoors or in crowded cities like Imperial City.

Depends what your expectations are. I hear some people say Oblivion is 'playable' or 'smooth enough' for them, but it turns out they're getting as little as 15FPS...

I'm getting somewhere around 30-40 FPS in the most strenuous areas like forests and other large outdoor areas - not that satisfying, considering I have pretty much the optimum system for this game.

i was able to do 1600x1200 with bloom and 4x and it was playable, not fyling but very playable, even at 1920 without any extras it was still very good, no stoppages or glitches

I run everything on max, my only problems are when there are more then 3 things attacking me in tall grass with lots of trees outdoors. Otherwise it is perfectly playable.

From my experience, Oblivion is very scalable. Just turn all the sliders down and you'll be set. With a 9600 Pro Advantage, it could do 800x600 with little grass and most settings down fine with low view distance. <A64 3200+, 1024 Ram> With a 7600gt, it could do 1024x768 with most settings about midway with view set at full.

get it, i'm sure you will find it looking nice and runnign decent compaing to other games you usually play on your system...i even played it at 640x480 on my onboard and it was nice and fast, i remembered my might and magic days from 96, when i has 486 and 14 monitor and floppy drive and no sound...night and day, besides the game is fun even withotu all eyecandy...i honestly did not play any fantasy rpg games since might and magic days, but this game got me playign ti hours at a time

Because people are interested in it?

Go crap in one of thousand conroe threads.

OP, I'd get it. As said, you'll be able to find a playable setting and when you eventually upgrade, all the better. The mods alon will ensure this game has a long run.
