I am a imperial and I specialize in heavy armor/weaponry. Lately I have been interested in building up my magic and started the mages guild. I think I have run into an error in the game and I can't get a recommendation from cheydinhal. It says on quests falcar says I can't join the mages guild being a criminal or something like that. Well I somehow was able to get the quest completed by bringing back the ring to deetsan but I can't get a recommendation. Is there anyway to bypass this? I also want to know which mages guild recommendations I do have and is the mages guild necessary to build magic?

It's been a long time since I played, but I think your problem has something to do with your reputation or karma or whatever Oblivion calls it. In short, you're too bad.

It is not necessary, but it is the only way I know to be able to make your own spells other than to buy the wizards tower DLC. All pre-made spells can be used by anyone with the skills to use them.

You need to get a recommendation from every mages guild (I think all the major towns have one) to get into the Mages guild. It has been a while for me, so I don't remember the specifics of what each guild asks you to do. But you do need to go to each and ask their leader for a recomendation, then do what he says you need to do.

You can force the quest complete with a command, but you will likely have to look up the commands on Google to figure out how. The Oblivion Wiki generally has those workarounds posted, so that would be a good place to start.

This is why I go straight for the Mages guild whenever I start a new character. And I try to buy all the essential spells as soon as I can. Even for warriors there are too many uses for magic to just ignore it for half the game.
