Oblivion on x1900xtx, what's better? HDR or 4xAA+Bloom ?

I'm getting my sapphire x1900xtx tomorrow probably in the mail and I'm just wondering what setting I'm gonna get the best graphics with.

I'll be playing at 1280x1024 native res on my LCD and I want to max everything out as much as I can. Wondering if things'll look better with just HDR enabled or with 4xAA and Bloom (since HDR and AA can't be enabled together it seems in Oblivion)

I also plan on using AF.. 8 or 16 if the card can handle it

any opinions on what looks best?

thanks

Is there seriously a video card called the "x1900xtx"? Jesus, you think they could put in some more "x"s? It'd sound "ULTRA X-TREME!?" if it was maybe the "x1x9x0x0xxxtx"

yes, the x1900 xtx has an extra 100mhz clocked on the ram, IIRC.

i'd probably go with full HDR and lower AA (don't own oblivion, just saying what i'd probably do)... i imagine the 4xAA would r@pe framerates worse than full HDR

And it costs about $100 more than the slightly slower 1900xt. You're paying a buck a megahertz.

I personally prefer HDR. AA is nice, but graphics wise HDR makes it prettier.

Plus you can jack up antriscopic filtering. Make no mistake though, you will see "jaggies" if you go with HDR.

HDR is better, higher res you go less you need AA anyway IMHO.

I always thought that too, but even at 2560x1600, I still see them quite a bit.

It's all about balance. And, in Oblivion, IMO, HDR is done extremely well and worth sacrificing AA for. Granted, I wish it didn't have to be, but, let's face it, this game would be completely unplayable with HDR+AA. Even an XTX struggles to keep Far Cry above 30fps with HDR+AA.

But the best way for you to decide is to try both and see for yourself. Don't use forest scenery... try somewhere in town in order to be able to focus on some straight lines and see how much AA makes a difference.

HDR looks better than Bloom. Best bet is to play a bit with HDR then try Bloom+AA and see which you prefer. I prefer just HDR myself, bloom just doesn't look as good. 16xAF shouldn't trouble a X1900XTX at that resolution.

If you think that's bad, look at this for name: XFX GeForce 7900GTX 512MB DDR3 XXX Edition

Buying a Video Card is like buying an Intel CPU, confusing to say the least.

hdr looks awesome in this game. i tried aa and bllo but it just didn't look as nice. so its hdr and 16x af for me 🙂

On my 19" CRT I dont see the need for Anti-Aliasing at 1600x1200.
Since I can now play most games at 1600x1200, I only use it for older games that wont run higher than 800x600 or so. (Dungeon Keeper 2.)

And the High-Dynamic Range looks awesome. I thought the Lost Coast Demo was cool, but using it throughout an entire game is great.

Unless you find it distracting in which case its better to not use it.

I'm on a 19" CRT too, and I notice the aliasing in this game more than I usually do at 16x12. It might be location. I've been in/around the Imperial City most of the time so far, all the steps and vertical columns in there look godawful to me w/o AA when I'm moving around, jaggies jumping around everywhere. And, it might also be that I'm gawking at stuff a lot more than I'd do in a game like HL2 or Q4.

Odd that I don't seem to care for the HDR I suppose, I find it kinda excessive. The Bloom isn't quite as in-your-face. So I guess that puts me in the AA + Bloom camp.

OP, you'll have to try both ways, and see what you like better!
