--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(FIRST: if you havent' bought the game then you must! Its that good!)

So I got Oblivion last night ;) and have been playing it quite a bit. Nothing below is too much of a spoiler. I'm not claiming to be an expert on the game so this is my initial reaction. Now, I love the game but there are some drawbacks...

First things first, my system consist of a 1.8 GHZ venice, 1gb ram, 7800 GT & 7200.9 HDD. When i installed the game it detected my system for ultra high quality settings, w00t. I have everything maxed and it looks awesome. Haven't ran FRAPS yet but it looks fine.
My major gripes are:

1) LOADING TIMES. Everywhere you go you have to load the map. Every building you enter in a city has to be load, usually <10 seconds. But still annoying. If you run a straight line while on your horse then the "loading area" text will pretty much stay on your screen the whole time it seems like. Note that you can still do w/e you want but it says and is loading the area.

2) Draw distance: When running outside you see nice 3D grass at about 50 feet (I don't really know the distance since i'm not in the game) in front of you. at 51 feet its plain 2d bloby ground. as you run you'll notice trees & bushes just appearing out of nowhere... Disappointing to an extent. I'd be perfect with a long load time if stuff was already loaded up.... but it isn't! it seriuosly takes away from the game from a "real living world" point of view. P.S. I have the draw distance set to max too!

Misc:

0) the menus and the text looked like crap to me at first. I was not impressed at all, in fact I thought of it as a downgrade. However, it has grown on me and i'm back to liking it. I do still miss certain aspects of the menu/item layout of Morrowind. (I never had a grip with it so I wonder why it changed?)

1) its looks to be harder to level up, it took me a few hours to get to lvl 2 (I'm a wood elf thief)

2) Combat is awesome! Sneak attacks with bows do 3X damage... its awesome. Using your sword is cool too.

3) Radiant AI: It does look pretty cool but I'm not sure how much it will affect gameplay. Overhearing villagers talk is cool but its not the most important thing in the game (IMHO)

4) the Physics are sick! Arrows stick in heads and legs, tree, etc. You hit a small creature with a fully pulled back arrow and it will send him back a few feet. I just think the physics are one of the best parts!

5) money appears to be harder to get and come by. ESPECIALLY because any old merchant wont' buy stolen goods :( Us thiefs are gonna have to work harder to make a living!

I do love the game though, it looks awesome! My closing thoughts: I have been tempted to buy a 150 Raptor and I think the loads times might just have helped my decision. The loading is not horrible by any means, but rather an annoyance. Everyone always complains the only good thing a raptor will do is give you a few second of load time per map. Well, when you are playing Oblivion there are LOTS of load times so those second could quickly add up!

Alright, I know you touched a little on this, but let me ask you a question about the leveling system:

In Morrowind, it was a bit weird as you can say jump a lot and gain acrobatics and if that was a major/minor skill you would level up really fast... and the problem wit hthe system was you had to kind of "maximise" your level ups to get 5X multipliers (except luck) and it detracted from the gameplay I felt... to worry about that stuff.

woo anyways....

In Oblivion, how has the leveling system changed? I heard that if you, for example, use strength based skills, your strength will rise - which makes more sense. Are there leveling caps?

Well first, I'm no expert... i've only played a few hours. Now, from what I know/heard you skills are all determined by useage. The more you use a bow the better you get at marksmanship. Then the better you are at marksmanship the better off you are. For example: When first playing it would fatigue me to pull back an arrow. Then after using the bow a lot I moved up to a Novice in Marksmanship. Once a Novice, it doesn't drain any fatigue at all anymore to draw back. Hope this answers part of your question. As far as leveling caps go: I dont' know. I have the book guide to the game so I'll try looking through there for the answer. I'm assuming that you can only move your skills (like marksmanship) up so far. So maybe: Novice < begginer < advanced learner < expert bowman < Perfect archer (for example).

I'm picking it up today. I have 2gb of ram and will see if that improves the load times. Nice post OP!

Looks like all the people that trashed far cry with the "loading" bits can eat their own words. I am too lazy to go in the other post and quote their comments, though.

Thanks for this information... Had I not known this, I would have purchased the game. This is a big factor for me... Having the loading screen all the time isn't acceptable and that is what people were bragging Morrowind up for... Looks like this one missed out on that.

Woah there archangel:

The load times are not bad enough to not buy the game. Seriousely, I think (and think most will agree) taht the load times are an Annoyance, period. Its definitely not a deal breaker. i'm not saying oblivion is so good that its not capable of flaws but the ones it has are rather insignificant. I would like to know how the load times are with a 150 raptor.
