Oblivion looks choppy even at 60+ fps

I recently got oblivion for my PC listed in my sig below. I runs really well at 1280x1024 and stays 40+ fps outdoors and 60+ fps indoors. But no matter what frames I'm getting everything seems kind of jerky and choppy (especially when I run). The fighting and character movement is smooth as butter - Its basically the background or world that is choppy. I've tried turning alot of settings on and off, but nothing helps.

I was originally using the 84.21 drivers, and I tried the 84.56 drivers last night and it didn't change anything. Anybody have any ideas on what to try next?

Anybody have input on the beta patch?

Have you tried turning off V-Sync and/or disabling the frame buffer lookahead (I forget the exact term and am not at my gaming machine) within the video card settings? By default the NVidia drivers set the lookahead to 3.. some have reported that setting it to 0 or 1 can help.

Thats a pretty good idea! Its about the only setting I didn't think to change. I am pretty sure that it is set to look ahead 3 frames right now. (Vsync is always off for me).

I will try first thing when I get back home on my gaming rig. I take you are a "at work ATer as well? ;)

You can also try turning on V-sync but making sure triple buffering is enabled to see if that helps after you try the lookahead setting. Are you using any of the landscape LOD mods? There's a console command for showing fps and some other valuable stats, but i'm having trouble remembering what it is. I think "tft" and then the scroll lock key cycles through the stats. You're looking for "TextureMem". This will show how much memory the textures are needing from your video card. I hit 600mb sometimes with all of the LOD mods I have installed. I have a 512mb card, which means some of the textures have to be loaded into system memory instead of vram. This can cause stuttering. You have a 256mb card, so this could be a concern.

Another good idea, but I'm not using any mods - will definately check out the console commands though - (didn't even know oblivion had a console) :eek:

So you are saying the textures only get that big when you have mods installed right?

Did you set the HDD cache value to 1?
I found a huge decrease in stuttering after I enabled it. It was disabled by default for some wierd reason.

bUseHardDriveCache=1 in the .ini file.

The 84.25 beta drivers are the "Oblivion" drivers. Oblivion definitely isn't perfectly smooth on my computer, but it's not constantly choppy. When my framerates are high, the game runs very smoothly.

Woah that's weird. Anything over 30fps for me is brilliantly smooth.
