Oblivion is still an awesome game.

I've been working at an internship all summer and been trying to save money for grad school next year. As a result, I have decided to avoid buying all the new games (this goes back to Bioshock 2, FF13, etc). Also I'm at home all summer and the only internet connection we can get there besides dialup is a 3G aircard from Verizon (high ping times) so Xbox Live is right out.

As a result I was looking through my catalog and started playing Oblivion again and remembered just why I love all of the Elder Scrolls games. I've already put well over a hundred hours into the game before this summer and I've already put 20 or 30 into it since the Summer started. I don't even bother with the main story line, I just run around doing guilds and side quests.

Any other big Oblivion fans here?

I haven't played Oblivion in years...twaz alot of fun though. Went to the library the other day and they had the GOTY edition sitting there. Don't have my copy anymore and I wasn't in the mood to play then but I rented it (free) and instealled all the DLC so next time I do play it I can go through shivering isles.

I never finished it. I played it on the PC with a ton of mods, and then I got rid of my gaming machine and got a 360. I can't bring myself to play it without mods... I can't stand it. I'd probably be fine if I never knew what I was missing.

I bought it during a steam sale, included all the expansions, and I just can't get into it. Combat seems terrible to me.

I started playing it on the PC again a few weekends ago after picking up the GOTY edition on Steam for $10 during a sale they had. Main story is pretty mediocre, and I can't stand the repetitive nature of the Oblivion portals, but there's so much to do that has nothing to do with the portals, it doesn't really matter.

I agree I really don't like being in Oblivion so I ignore all the gates myself.

Theives Guild FTW!!!

Off topic, but video games at the library???? Is this what our society has to do to get a kid to read a freakin' book???? Is this why the OP can't even string together a grammatically correct title for his post????

I joke, but when I saw Xbox 360 games at my library for the first time, I definitely rolled my eyes a little bit. BTW, I live in California, where we are supposedly struggling with crippling governmental budget crises.

Bethesda makes some awesome games, but combat gameplay has always been their weakness, IMO. The VATs system in Fallout improved things, but there were definitely some major scaling issues in both Oblivion and in Fallout. I've heard that there are mods for the PC versions which make things better, but honestly it wasn't a big enough deal (for me) to check them out.

Melee combat in Oblivion was particularly boring. It always felt like playing rock 'em sock 'em robots, where you just have two dudes standing in front of each other whacking away until one of them falls down.

Oblivion on the consoles is pretty terrible, IMO, to the point of being unplayable.

Not only does the PC offer better visuals and controls, but it also offers the great benefit of mods, so you can fix the many, many flaws of vanilla Oblivion.

This is easily the worst Elder Scrolls game, but it is still pretty good. I just wish it wasn't as dumbed down. Morrowind was such an unforgiving game as far as quests and such.

See I read this thread early and I ended up leaving the gamestore with fo3 today for $15 lol. I'm not into the whole magic uber gay fantasy worlds and that's what I heard this game was about..

I'm not sure if that's how I'd describe it...

Oblivion does have a typical high fantasy, magic elven ruins, lush forest setting that is extremely overdone and uninteresting. It's a huge letdown coming from Morrowind, which had such unique setting and culture.

Even the previous lore didn't describe Tamriel as so fantasy forest like.

The PS3 version was absolutely fine.

It's fine if you've never played a modded PC version, which was my issue. What they say is true... ignorance is bliss. I had mods on which ensured the guards wouldn't magically know what bad thing you did even though nobody saw it, I had one that made it so everything didn't level up with you, and a mess of other stuff. Trying to play the game without those again is frustrating at best, and completely unplayable for some (like me).

You gotta understand that for us Fantasy fanatics Oblivion is like a dream game, because honestly there aren't too many fantasy themed games that are at the same grand scale as Oblivion, even with all it's flaws and glitches.

I liked Fallout 3 too, but since I love fantasy I ended up liking Oblivion a lot more. Also, Fallout 3's atmosphere is extremely depressing.
To the OP, I too started playing Oblivion again, after 1 year. Even though the graphics are strikingly outdated it's still an awesome game.

whoa, didn't know the console versions don't have mods on them, that's gotta suck big time :(

would still be a fun game to play, but entirely different for sure. for one thing, can't stand the default female face & hair, needed some help from mods to beautify them.

one of the activities I have enjoyed in oblivion was maxing out on athletics & speed & acrobatics and jump off random cliffs while gazing at the scenery. not only the ability to improve on your athleticism made the game that much more fun, it also had practical merits of being able to cover distances at a pretty good rate.

no such luck in FO3, the game doesn't even offer any vehicles to ride (ugh, other than the boat in PO DLC and the vertibird in BS DLC, neither of which you could control), discovering new locations a PITA at times. no matter how durable your character is, you die easily from falling a modest height. I believe this was a design choice for a more convincing background, but still. FO does have its own merits including VATs and more though, <3 both games. just wish there were a way you could move more freely in horizontal and vertical plane (jetpack anyone?)
