Oblivion has gone "softcore" so has its rating

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has rating changed to Mature due to mod to their female characters by hackers.

Quote:

?Some modders have used a third party tool to hack into and modify an art archive file to make it possible to create a mesh for a partially nude (topless) female that they add into the game. Bethesda didn?t create a game with nudity and does not intend that nudity appear in Oblivion. There is no nude female character in a section of the game that can be 'unlocked'. Bethesda can not control tampering with Oblivion by third parties. Bethesda is taking steps to ensure that modders can not continue to hack into Oblivion?s art archives to create partially nude figures."

Freaking ridiculous. So if I create a hack for the latest pokemon game that makes the characters nude, does that mean the game will go from E to M and kids won't be able to play it?

Definitely old news but I just noticed this line from Bethesda-
We further advised that the game contained occasional torture, vulgar acts, and gore.
Am I missing the torture? Damn.

But really, what torture and vulgar acts are they talking of? Cutting off the finger?

Edit- Likening this to the hot coffee mod is ludicrous at best and is a disservice to Oblivion modders.

Ahh, true. I forgot about that. Which I guess is a statement as to how serious it was 😛

Not that I agree with the rating, but I think the point was that the topless texture was already in the game. All the modders did was uncover it.

Bah, you draw characters from the inside out. Of course the textures will be there.

Still, if you didnt hack/mod the game (which Bethesda does not encourage or force you to do) you would not see the topless texture. YOU have to modify the game to see it, the game does NOT come like that. It's therefore the user's choice, not Bethesda's.

The unfortunate thing is, the people who make these "rulings", have little to no idea what they're talking about when it comes to games.

You can model the character, it doesn't mean you have to skin it.
Nor do I see why you would as it would just waste time if it was never intended to be viewable in game

I haven't seen the mod in action but from what I read, the tits look like crap anyway because they're meant to have clothes "latched" onto them. Therefore, Its not that they are actually skinned.

I may be wrong, just speculating.

well the things is that in those stupid games, the characters are not designed nude. what i mean, is that in oblivion, the creator designed nude characters and just put clothes on them. so it is diiferent. o well. Unreal Tournament is also rated M for no reason (yeah like all the teenagers never heard of all the cusses inside there?) and it didn't affect saled at all.

IMO, this is BS (and so was the Hot Coffee thing), but the rating isn't really my conern. My conern lies more with the impact that these types of decsions will have on the mod community...

The knock on effect of this could be that developers make their games so that they can?t be modified. Despite the improvement in sales a modding community may bring, developers tend to strive to get their games classified with as low a rating as possible to ensure maximum availability to the general public. If the modding community threatens that, then perhaps it will be the one to suffer.

While there are a lot of lame mods out there for almost any game (A LOT of lame mods!), there are also some really good ones and it helps find good talent. Take CS for example, if those people had not been able to mod we wouldn't have the most popular online FPS... There are also a number of good mods that probably will never become retail products, but are really great additional content for already good games (Minverva:Metastasis and HL2:Substance come to mind).

I don't blame the development houses for taking the steps they have to take to get the low ratings, but I think people pushing for these ratings need to understand the difference between developer created game content, third party mods, and the user interaction required to use them.

A.T.T.I.C. 😛

And to the change, its just sick, I mean sick. Literally sick. We can hack a guy to death with a sword and its ok, but if we see a little T & A its a mature game.

Anyone see the irony in that? I think Alanis Morissette said it best. :|

yeah i think people worry too much about tits...

And I bet anyone who plays Oblivion has NEVER seen them :Q

Seriously, wtf? That rating thing is SOOO..... out of place? M should be 8+ nowadays... tell me of a kid who hasnt seen porn at that age? I doubt there is one, unless specific cases where he doesnt have access to that kind of stuff (3rd world countries.. dunno)

And its not like youre gonna go "OMFG MY MIND HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DAMAGED BY WATCHING NUDE PEOPLE $#%!" the most that will happen is you become curious and wanna try it yourself lol

Edit - and we're only talking about simple nudes here

Yeah, the base human meshes are just prototypes which are essentially "naked" like mannequins, but I doubt Bethesda actually made naked textures for them, or added geometry details like nipples or gentials. So a 3rd party would actually have to make the textures.

BTW, in 3D modeling, skinning usually refers to adding a physique modifier to meshes which gives each vertex weight around a particular set of bones, allowing the "skin" of the mesh to deform properly as the bones move.

They should ban mannequins.

You know the ones they have in malls and stuff. It might give little children brain damage as only 18s and over can see undressed mannequins.

i'll be in the minority but i think Oblivion IS a mature game . . . without the mod. 😉

and why is this topic in Video . . . again?

I have no idea what this means. You might just as profitably have stated: "Hondas are reliable. Of course the moon is round."

OMG, cg boobies! :Q

I walked into Wal Mart today and discovered that they're no longer selling Oblivion and will turn you down if you ask. Absurd, to be certain. On the 360 version obtaining said boobies is impossible, yet it still got the ax.

The funny thing about this is that Walmart won't sell a game with an undeserved rating and yet on the video aisle 10 feet away, they have multiple "Unrated" and "Uncensored" movies available... 😛
