Oblivion GOTY on the PS3

I have the original Oblivion on my PC (no expansions / addons) and I am considering picking it up the GOTY edition for my PS3 (IIRC, the product description says it comes with Knights of Nine and Shivering Isles) because it never did run all that well at 1600x1200 (my dell 2001fp's native resolution) on my ancient PC (x1950 pro 512mb agp, Athlon 64 4000+ socket 939, 2gb of ram, nforce3 ultra (aka no drivers)) and my new Samsung HDTV is coming next week:)

Questions:
  • Does it include all of the official / payed for plugins located here
  • What settings on the PC would be comparable to the PS3 running @ 1080P (aside from the obvious resolution differences)?
  • Does it feel more natural with the PS3's controller? The UI on the PC had "console port" written all over the interface. (take advantage of sixaxis by any chance?)
  • Any known major issues with the PS3 version?

Thanks

It includes all the plugins except fighters stronghold.

Well the PS3 and 360 don't really run it at 1080p, it's actually only 1280x720 then scaled to 1920x1080. Other than that, it looks like the PC with all settings set to max, with HDR and 2xAA. The additional community made texture packs on the PC make it look much better, but it still looks excellent on the PS3.

It does feel better with a controller, but the PC had various mods to remedy the issue of the unintuitive UI. It does not use Sixaxis.

No issues that I can think of with the PS3 version.

In general I would say that if you already have it on the computer, just turn down the resolution a bit. The main reason why I disliked normal Oblivion was it's leveling system. All the monsters leveled with you and so did the items. It essentially made it useless to level since any enemy you are fighting would just get stronger to make up for better equipment. This issue can be resolved with various mods on the PC, but not for the consoles.

The PC also has some excellent story driven mods that seem remniscent of the old days of RPG games. The main quest in Oblivion sucked, and the only good story Bethesda made was that of Shivering Isles.

Oblivion on any system but the PC is lame, IMO, as Oblivion needs to be modded beyond recognition *exaggeration* in order to be playable.

I would love a PlaneScape: Torment / Baldurs Gate 2 type (story driven, setting does not really matter) non action RPG game running on the Oblivion engine. Which ones do you suggest? Also, any of those mods require the expansion pack(s)?

This mod Tears of the fiend comes to mind. It's actually the merger of two seperate mods that were related, but the whole package is included with it, so you don't need to download anything else. There is a description on the site.

You don't need Shivering Isles for it, so just get the 1.2 version.

I don't think it comes with the plug ins. Only KOTN and SI.

Any tips for playing this on the PS3? I can play the game just fine on the PC using the mouse/keyboard interface, but on a game controller I suck so badly that I just keep getting killed... :p

Anyone able to verify this? The PC version (retail at least) comes with the plugins (that were available up to that point), iirc.

If its anything like the Xbox 360 version then it doesn't :(

Hmm, they do not offer the plugins via the PSN AFAIK, so it would not have any benefit for them not to ship it with the PS3 version, but I do not like the sound of that.

I should also point out that when I say PC retail version, I meant the Knights of the Nine retail disc, I have no idea bout the PC's GOTY.

Well, I read on the Bethesda forums that it only comes with KotN and SI, no plugins at all. Anyone able to report on if the PS3's version is a buggy mess of a port or not? (reading mixed reports, any patches for it on the PS3?)

The PS3 port is actually better than on the 360 (can't say anything for PC). I have a copy of it, and it always runs extremely well, and it looks better than the 360 version did (PC, depends on your setup). Whoever is telling you it's a buggy port is a liar ;). It's an excellent port.
