Oblivion: first time player of these types of games

OK, so Oblivion is supposed to be this great game and everybody is loving it (except for the crashes and stuff) so I thought I would give it a try. Now, I have never played this type of game before, so what would you advise me to do, mainly from a standpoint of initial character setup.
Thanks!

I would recommend just picking whichever class suits you best. Don't like a character? Don't hesitate to make a new one! 😛

Find a character that suits you the best, and then go from there one. The varierty in Oblivion is incredible.

Good luck! 🙂

Hard to give a suggestion in such an open ended game like this. Just start playing, and if you have any questions, then come back.

The only suggestion i can give atm though is to do alchemy, but don't choose it as a mainskill.

If you never played this type game before, you will probably need to buy a game guide, as that's the way even many veterans are playing.

One suggestion is to make a save at the point were you select your class/skills (when you are about to leave the prison) that way if anything you can load it up right there and create a new character without repeating the whole prison stuff.

doesn't matter at all

i have over 150 hours into the game . . . i started as a complete Fantasy RPG n00b and created a character whose skills i didn't like . . .
the results: i am still on Level 13, getting the better Armour, Weapons and Enemies and having a blast and evidently "blundering" thru just fine.

Just play it. 😉

😀

My advice is to be a fighter character until you get the hang of it. Once you're comfortable with the game you can go back and make a theif, caster, etc.

I've never played Oblivion, but yeah, I always seems to choose the fighter/melee character. I like the magic aspect, but always seem to have trouble. With a fighter and big weapons, I seem to have much better luck progressing thru the game.

the best thing about oblivion is your 'class' really doesn't dictate your skills. its possible to be a theif without stealth, its possible to be an assasin in full plate armor. its possible to win the arena as a theif (stealth and alchemy based) character.

Its all in how you play the character, just play. I play a Wood elf with stealth as primary skills, endurance and int as favorited stats, and block, blade, light armor, alteration, illusion, archery, and security as my main skills. It was slow at first, and hard, but now Its easy as pie to take down most things as long as i can get the drop on them.

Just do whatever sounds like fun to you. I play a battle mage with blades, blunt, arrows, magic, stealth, security, alchemy...I guess I do a bit of everything and doing really well.

Yeah, you can do pretty much anything because all you have to do is pick some of the abilities you like and use them.

I have a Dreamweaver (Spellword) named Garth and he specializes in blades, destruction magic, restoration magic, illusion magic, security, alchemy. I also created an Aragonian character for my son who is a thief that specializes in all the normal thief-like abilities.

A Breton is probably the best race to start with if you want to deal with magic. While something like a Redguard would be better if you wanted to concentrate on melee.
