I saw the earlier posting about this but now that the deals are gone for this camera...I wouldlike to find a black one with the kit lens. Is it better to save money by buying it online? Or is it better to pay reatil and buy locally?

Buying it locally would allow me to pay for it over 12 months no interest at ritz camera.

i'd slap you for buying at ritz camera! 😛

look for it off the 'net - much cheaper. i went to ritz in DC, what a rip.

For the extra $50-$100 that the kit lens runs, it's worth it. It's light, it's easy to use, it's fairly versitile. And it's dirt cheap. Sure it's not as fast or as high quality as some L glass or a high end Sigma, but you'll have a LOT of learning to do with the D-SLR and it's a very inexpensive lens to test out settings on.

You get a fairly wide lens (18mm) and a *bit* of zoom (55mm). Sure it's not that fast, but it's incredibly light weight and very easy to carry around. Very good match for an entry level DSL-R with a beggining user.

It's not really great any any one thing, but then again, short of long zoom it doesn't do anything really bad either.

For the minimal upfront cost when bundled, you can't really beat it.

this is what I'll think of from now on when someone says "there's no such thing as a stupid question" 😉

buydig is good, I have bought several regular consumer level cams from them.

A few weeks ago I got a Rebel XT with the 18-55mm lens kit. Awesome camera. I then purchased a Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM lens for $223 shipped. It's a pretty good lens. I now have my eye on a Canon 100mm macro lens or a Sigma 150mm macro lens. ($599 & $630)

Also, if you have a *real* camera shop near you....Ritz doesn't count...you may be surprised at the prices they have on their stuff. If their price is a bit higher, you might get some good discounts on accessories at the time of purchase (bags, media, extra charger, new/used lenses, ect).

When I bought my 300D last fall, the local camera shop was priced $30 lower than Best Buy. I didn't actually buy from the local shop because of a boatload of BB gift cards and reward points that I had, but I did use them for price matching purposes.

If I didn't have that, I would have bought local without a doubt.

I bought the 350d with the kit lense, and I bought the 50mm 1.8 canon lense at the same time.

The 50mm is just wastly better than the kit lense it isnt funny, even though it is extremely cheap.

Then I bought the Sigma 18-200mm, quality is about the same as the kit lense, but it has much much better build quality and ofcorse much much better reach.

My recomendation, get the body with the 50mm or the sigma 18-125mm then think about going for what you need more.
