Obese 'can be refused operations...

Forty percent of doctors agree obese patients should be refused joint surgery if resources are limited, a survey suggests.

The same proportion felt smokers and drinkers could be barred from certain procedures, the British Medical Association's magazine BMA News found.

The 225 doctors polled said the NHS realistically could not treat everyone.

But they said treatment could be denied only for clinical reasons, rather than because of cost.

americans have such a skewed view of fatties. to us obesity is normal. travel anywhere else in the world and they are about as common as midgets.

If your 80lbs+ overweight that is A LOT of weight man....

Side not it takes AGES to get stuff done on the NHS...

If obese people do not feel the need to better themselves by watching their diet, exercising, and whatnot, why would doctors feel compelled to help them?
Reminds me of an episode of Scrubs when Turk turns down someone for a liver transplant because the guy broke the transplant rule of no alcohol consumption.

As usual, I think the inverse should be followed. If the obese person can pay for it, why the fvck not help them? It *IS* their body, after all. Not anyone else's.

You're fat, your opinion doesn't matter.

They can. But the point is that theirs is a socialist healthcare system, so they don't pay for it.

Well for some things it still holds true in a non socialized healthcare environment. For artificial parts with essentially unlimited supplies I couldn't care less who gets surgery. You have the money or have insurance that will cover it? Hop up on the table buddy.

For donor tissue, however, there should be exclusions. Did you destroy your liver because you couldn't boozing? Too bad for you, to the bottom of the list! If we get through the list & have tissue for you, great. If not...

You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get a fat person through a major surgery like a arthroplasty without complications...

I work in a recovery room, and even though the docs screen their patients, patients that are fat or very old are very difficult to give a good outcome.

Why should you replace a painful but functioning knee if they're literally going to destroy the new joint & probably the bone around it in a few years?

Bullshit it doesn't count. I may be fat, but that doesn't make my opinion weigh any more or less than yours.

In the hospital my wife works at, they can't even do some operations on the disgustingly obese people because the beds aren't rated to hold up the weight. The beds are some special ones that can raise and lower and change directions electrically to aid the surgeon.

But they are rated at like 250 kilos and won't hold some of the whales that come in.

250 kilos? Holy crap.

I'm only ~110 kg. If I ever get above 125-130 kg... someone please shoot me. It's not that hard to find my address.

How much overweight is Obese? I can understand if you're 400 pounds, eating McDonalds everyday. but what about your average, husky guy? Take myself for example. My BMI says my healthy weight is 170. Even when I was at my fittest, running 15 klicks and doing 100 pushups a day I NEVER broke 200 pounds. Who decides if you're overweight?
