While speaking at DreamWork's animation studio in Glendale, California, President Obama indicated Tuesday he could tell an immigrant by looking at his or her face -- a statement that would be slammed as racist if it were uttered by a Republican.

“As I was getting a tour of DreamWorks, I didn’t ask, but just looking at faces I could tell there were some folks who are here not because they are born here, but because they want to be here,” he said. “They bring extraordinary talents to the United States, and that’s part of what makes America special.” - Obama

OK...using that same theory, Obama was not born in the USA? ():)

The OP just posted a thread in OT where he bragged about his friend sexually harassing a possibly underage clerk at the mall.

This thread is right up there with that one. I'm not sure what is wrong with the OP but he for sure isn't right.

The OP's point was that it would be racist if a Republican did it, which is probably true. But it seems so mild that I can't see anyone buying into the accusation even against a Republican, unless they were already convinced that Republican was racist. People are becoming blase to accusations of racism unless there seems to be some real meat to them.

So . . . meh.

Now that was a well thought out comment. +1

Not even close to racist. Stupid preplanned pandering ok, but racist?

The reason I thought it was racist was because for example (not saying this happened)...he looked at an Asian person and immediately without asking made the assumption that this person based on his appearance/race could not have been born in the USA and must have immigrated here.

Who could have Obama looked at and would have immediately thought "now this person was born in the USA"? Would it be a person with Red Skin, White Skin...who?

Racist yes; used in a racist degrading way - no.

Yes, had a Republican stated such it would have been pounced on.

But either way; it is making a mountain out of a anthill.

I agree, it just shows the double standards played by most of the Liberal Media that this did not make any of the news outlets like CNN/MSNBC. If Romney or Bush made a guest appearance and said something like this it would make major headlines.

He could have just been honest and said that he knows that there are immigrants there because dreamworks hires the best from around the world. There's no fucking way he can tell just by looking at someone if they are an immigrant.

This is why Republicans are laughed at. They simply don't understand racism. They just don't get it.

You thought it was racist because you soooo wanted it to be racist that you jumped at the chance to call it so. You clearly haven't a clue when it comes to racism.

Obama claimed to be able to tell who was an immigrant based on how they looked.

Why don't you explain how we would be doing this without racial profiling?:colbert:

It used to be that Racism was defined by an element of belief that a person's race creates an inferior or superior relationship as it relates to another race... And, I suppose a discrimination or prejudice condition based on that belief.

I, therefore, can't agree Obama's comment was racist. I would, however, wonder what evidence present on the face of the folks at Dream Works might lend one to conclude some were immigrants.

If you grew up in Hawaii where Obama did, it's quite easy for me to understand where Obama is coming from being born and raised here myself.

We have a constant influx of newly minted immigrants here in Hawaii from all over the world, all bunched up together on these small islands in the middle of the Pacific. After experiencing that for a number of years, it gets pretty obvious noticing who's new to the islands and who's not. Be it physical appearance, nuanced gesticulations, their gait, their stance, the clothes one wears, the way a person points to something, the way they express a quantity with their fingers, the way they have a constant look of apprehension about them.

After awhile you just get good at it without actually realizing why or when it happened.

Methinks folks from Western Europe develop the same "trait" as they have a whole bunch of different cultures jam packed next to each other.
