I work for State ( consular affairs) and these workers probable had very little access from the sounds of it.
Passport files will not have much info that is not already known and/or been released by his staff.

People that do this, and they will be caught, will most likely lose their security clearance. If you don?t have SC then you can?t enter the building and hence can?t do your job. Of course being contract employees they can be let go a lot faster then regular GS employees.

So for those looking for some smoking gun from this, don?t hold your breath.

This appears no different than a person who works at a credit agency surfing the net and then being "Oh, hey, I'm bored, let's see what Madonna's credit is.". Nothing to see here, folks.

That's my take on it at well. Just a couple of nosy workers, no conspiracy or dirty tricks involved.

I used to work in a law enforcement agency. We'd pull DLs on friends, family, and other random people all the time, just for entertainment. (One key difference: at that time DL info was considered public information, so it was legal. I believe access has since been restricted somewhat.)

Exactly. When the movie "La Bamba" was released, my friend's dad, an FBI agent, pulled the FBI file of the investigation of that plane crash which killed Buddy Holly, etc. He even brought it home, and I remember my friend and I getting into it, looking over the grisly accident scene photos, etc. Nothing nefarious about it - just curiosity. Still, I agree it's wrong to have done it if the contractors lacked a legit reason.

These aren't government employees, but contractors.

This is probably the 5th time I'm posting here that I DO NOT TRUST GOVERNMENT CONTRACTORS.

And contracting is a giant waste of taxpayer money.

How convenient that these other breaches have now been 'discovered'...

The fact of the matter is that only one of the 3 candidates had any possible motive for this, and that candidate is Hillary Clinton. She's been looking to paint Obama as a Muslim for months now - how perfect if she could correlate a few out of country trips to Muslim countries or areas with that...

The idea that this was all a bunch of kids playing around is ludicrous.

"WASHINGTON - The passport files of the three presidential candidates ? Sens. Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain ? have been breached, the State Department said Friday.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the breaches of McCain and Clinton's passport files were not discovered until Friday, after officials were made aware of the privacy breach regarding Obama's records and a separate search was conducted.

McCormack said the individual who accessed Obama's files also reviewed McCain's file. This contract employee has been reprimanded, but not fired. The individual no longer has access to passport records, he said.

"We are reviewing our options with that person" and their employment status, McCormack said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke with at least Obama and Clinton on Friday and expressed her regrets. State Department officials also planned to brief the staffs of all three candidates on Friday.

McCormack declined to name the companies that employed the contractors, despite demands by a senior House Democrat that such information is in the public interest.

"At this point, we just started an investigation," he said. "We want to err on the side of caution."

Traveling in Paris, McCain said any breach of passport privacy deserves an apology and a full investigation.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

What kind of "fishing expedition" were these State employees on, and more important, who sent them?

People want a smaller goverment then this is what you get. that way people can say "but with me we have X number less of GS employees..." That and we use contractors as a test to see if them can handle the job. Passport is not easy and a lot can't do it.
Theres pros and cons to it. We, CA of State, brought on over 500 people in the last year. DS, security, is having a hard time getting all their backgrounds. So things like this will happen. And even then they may be squeaky clean people that never had problems before.
But State will handle this VERY quickly. I even joked in my office I guess we will be getting a lof of actions soon. i.e. removels maybe.

No, and I never said I did. Perhaps you missed my previous post where I clearly stated they'll never be able to prove it.

If speculation is off grounds here, we had all better stop posting.

And folks with glass jaws should be careful with the stones. ;)

What's "convenient" is your POV. You have a habit of only considering the possibilities that work for you to maintian that POV, now matter how ludicrous the conclusions.

Not everything is a conspiracy Pabs. I'm not a Clinton fan at all, but I'm objective enough to acknowledge simple human nature. While it's always possible there's some nefarious motives at work, there's no evidence to suggest it.

I think that the people caught will say that they were paid to do this by McCain's campaign. Then McCain will be entrenched in a huge scandal and might have to drop out, leaving the only Republican left still in it, Ron Paul to ascend to glory and the nomination. Of course that was the plan all along, because the people caught doing this were actually Paul die hards.

WASHINGTON, March 21 (Reuters) - The State Department acknowledged on Friday that workers had snooped into passport files of Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain, a day after disclosing workers had improperly viewed the file of Sen. Barack Obama.

The department apologized to the three top U.S. presidential candidates - Democrats Clinton and Obama and Republican McCain - and promised an investigation into the breach.

Clinton's file was accessed last summer by a trainee hired to help relieve the backlog of passport applications at the time, said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.

I don't see what the fuss is all about.

About the only thing in passport info not otherwise available is your SSN.

No, passport info won't even show where you've traveled. You'd have to see the actual passport with the visa stamps etc in it.

so, after 16 years in DC, the best she could come up with was a temp who instantly got caught?

I don't believe it was "instantly" ... Everything I've read suggests these breaches occurred some time ago and were only recently discovered.
