Inaugurations set mood more than foster great speeches.

Carter => Tied up in bicentennial pageantry but folksy, determinedly not Nixon.
Reagan's first => Greed, optimism, a return of of the old guard to take up the reins of power. Long line of black limos replaced Carter's stroll.
Bush I's first => Continuity, technocratic
Clinton's first => Optimism, baby boomer self absorption.
Bush II's => Fear for the future, astonishing lack of fitness for the job.

Shouldn't we judge him on his actions rather than his skin color? Shit, even MLK wanted that.

So, no, let's wait until he's finished being The Boss before we start erecting statues to his greatness. He may be a real shit president for all we know.

If the haters here had more black friends like me then maybe they could understand. That's all I'm saying.

Oh I have plenty. They also hate him for his character, policy and what he has said in his speeches.

WHAT?! I mean REAL black friends. Not suburban blacks.

Ah.

So you feel that you can only be a REAL black person if you live in the ghetto and in poverty, endorse thug culture, drink 40s and such. A black person that doesn't work hard for success ceases to be Black, right?

This is the kind of argument we heard from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who did not explicitly endorse Obama.

This is pretty much counter to who Barrack is, and how he identifies himself. I'm surprised you support him...

He beat McCain, that's how. That and running a near flawless campaign. Oh, and 16 years of the most vile character assassination against Hilary Clinton on the part of Republicans helped Obama immensely, he couldn't have done it without that. Having Bush as his predecessor certainly helped him clobber McCain; hard to run as a Republican with that albatross hanging around your neck.

Edit: Obama Girl, forgot to mention Obama Girl. Obama would not have captured the nomination w/o her, no way, no how.

Just taking a devil's advocate standpoint, why not? You can have very conservative values that are totally atheist.

Yes, but generally it is looked down upon by their fellow conservatives. It's like wearing an American flag suit in Iran. Or being gay in Texas. Or teaching creationism in science class in a San Francisco jr high.

Many older Asians (ie, people who have moved here from Asian countries) are right-leaning/conservative, and either atheist or casually practicing one of the various eastern religious systems. They want government out of their money-- its a very "pull yourself up by your bootstraps", "just work hard enough" line of thinking.

Are there seriously people on here who don't understand the historic significance of this address? You people don't belong on the internet.

Why aren't you a shining beacon of intelligence and tolerance. Anyone who has a differing view from yours should be banned from the Internet? I assume you will be volunteering for the Obama Brown Shirts intimidation mob, correct?

If Lincoln was here he would punch you right in your face.

If you don't think this is one of the most significant events in US history then your are either in denial or are completely delusional.
Up there with the signing of the Declaration of Independance? Bill of Rights? Emancipation proclamation? Pearl Harbor? Armistice Day? VE Day? VJ Day? Hiroshima? Nagasaki? D-Day? Geez, the sinking of The Maine was more significant than this speech.

Please seperate the election and inauguration of the first black president from this massively overly hyped speech.

I am so very glad that Obamas agenda is not an extreme left wing one, because I am beginning to feel like its Berlin in 1932.

Except the one's living on government assistance.

QFT. Obama becoming Pres is big (although no bigger than any other president being sworn in, except for the media hype), but the speech is vague, uncertain, and he won't "change" anything. Obamabots need to come to terms with that, or the next 4 years are going to be VERY confusing.

The only reason why this will be the most watch Inauguration ever is because nobody has a job and can watch it from home.
