Obama's Blackberry

Text

Obama also suggested the list does not include any world leaders.

"Typically, world leaders are going to be contacting me through the Oval Office. They know how to reach me there," he said.

The exclusive list of those who have the president's e-mail address reportedly includes a small group of senior aides and cabinet officials. According to a report in the New York Times, security precautions make it impossible to forward an e-mail from the president, or to send the president attachments.

uh. Correct me if I'm wrong, but how the heck does that work?

doesnt the blackberry have security in it that enables you to shut out forwards and attachments? im assuming thats how they did it.

Very easy... place him on a local connection with no way to get to the internet and see if he figures it out. 😉

I'm guessing they have smarter people working on it than you...

If the president sends me an email, the only way I'd not be able to forward it is if modifications were made to my MTA or my mail client, both of which I control. So how is this possible?

Haha, Obama's funny:

"It's a very exclusive list. How exclusive? Everyone look at the person sitting on your left. Now look at the person sitting on your right. None of you have my e-mail address."

Perhaps Obama sends email directly from his account only to people whose accounts/clients are under his control?

They are probably using a filtered repeater in the whitehouse, and syncing it with a Blackberry Enterprise server.

Seems like the only possible option

I remember MS showing how they could set emails to not allow cut and paste and to delete after reading back when I went to the Server 2003 launch event.

Most likely a header based thing. But it's still up to the client or the local MTA to manage it. This would be trivial to setup in an outgoing SMTP server to filter, but that outgoing mail server would have to be configured for it with rules....

Whats to prevent someone from copy/pasting the email into a new message? (basically a forward?). Unless, of course, that is losing your job/jailtime for doing so..

you're assuming they are actually sending a text email. perhaps they have an system using an authenticated server whereby Obama sends a link to hosted content and only that user can access the link one time?

<shrug>

I dunno, but then again I don't work for the NSA.

OK, but how are they going to block me taking a screenshot of the e-mail and e-mailing or posting that?

In both Notes & Outlook, you can deny the ability to forward, and I know in Notes you can deny the ability to copy&paste.

Oh look over there, what are those in the distance? They kinda look like helicopters, and are all black. What do you think those are for?
