Is this similar to how the White House expects the IRS or the Justice Department to behave?

I think the general idea is that they may "reclassify" broadband carriers as common carriers, and thus can then impose net neutrality restrictions. They couldn't impose net neutrality when they were classified as information services but reclassifying them opens them up to FCC regulations.

In any case, if this actually happens, it will change the path of how the internet evolves from here. I'm sure ISPs will move even more to a metered data allowance or just charge per the GB. That may raise the rates of internet service but at least it should be more transparent.

so the FCC chairman is going to kill his future chances to have a lucrative cush "do nothing" job-in-title-only... for life after leaving the FCC. that would really be surprising considering
his career history

Yeah, this doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me. ISPs have almost every reason to want to meter us by the GB, or give preference to certain websites, etc.

This.

I'm still confused how he was eligible for a job where he has such a clear conflict of interest.

No matter how much Obama makes moves like this as long as he runs as a "democrat" people on that team will continue to look the other way. It's as bad as the conservatives who like Ayn Rand for being a capitalist... who BTW hated religion, god and best of all Reagan and supported abortion big time.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Pretty fucking incompetent White House, if you ask me. I wonder if they have an actual strategy for ISIS or ebola yet...

More Incompetent than the Bush administration or Clinton Administration or previous Bush administration? A president isn't a dictator with a Magic ball that can see into the future. The middle east (the world) is complex and every move has ramifications. But for some reason a lot of people in this forum think that the gun-ho strategy of the Bush administration worked out well. I think all we can expect is to try to pick the best reasoned path amongst a lot of bad paths and not to make obviously stupid decisions (like Invading Iraq).

While you are at it, why don't you tell me what is different in how the White House is handling Ebola and Isis, vs, how a reasonably informed person would handle it, or just how you would handle it?

I thought all the bad things in the world happened because of the Koch brothers? You know all the Democratic billionaires like Soros, Bloomberg, Ballmer, Benioff, Simmons, Steyer, etc. never push policies that lead to destabilizing foreign counties and taking away our Constitutional rights.

F__K Net Neutrality... if we're going to fight lets go for common carrier. Lets make it so THEY will fight for net neutrality without common carrier instead.

I remember when cable internet was still young and I had a choice since they had to share the lines. Let me, a Netflix subscriber, choose. I bet at least 1 will offer good netflix speed and then get my business.

So, after reading a couple of select posts in this thread, I'm made to believe that Obama being a Democrat and a proponent of net neutrality is a really bad thing. :D watdafuq?

There's just no pleasing some people I guess.

Article at theverge today, Obama says FCC should reclassify net as utility to hope protect net neutrality. Totally agree. Net should be a utility, it is absolutely essential to modern life.
