Obama wants Russia to "give him space"

President Obama assured Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Monday that he'd have "more flexibility" after the November election, during a conversation that appeared to focus on the touchy issue of missile defense.
Obama, during a sit-down with Medvedev in Seoul, urged Moscow to give him "space" until after November. The conversation was relayed by a TV pool producer who listened to the recording from a Russian journalist.
"This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility," Obama told Medvedev.
Obama appeared to be asking Medvedev to relay this point to Vladimir Putin, who recently won election to return to the Russian presidency.

"On all these issues, but particularly missile defense ... this can be solved but it's important for him to give me space," Obama said.
Medvedev told the president he understood the "message about space. Space for you ..."
After Obama noted he'd have more flexibility in the future, Medvedev told him: "I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir."

I wonder what he means by "more flexibility" in refernce to "my last election"?

How is that anything other than obvious? A second-term President doesn't have to worry about re-election. Remember when President Bush, after winning in 2004, said "I got some political capital from this election, and I intend to spend it"? That. At this point it appears highly likely President Obama will be re-elected, but we shall see. If he is, he will have a level of freedom he currently lacks.

And maybe when the Republican platform has something to do with actually helping the problems in America instead of just trying to keep Obama from being re-elected, then they'll stop being so obstructionist.
 
What I mean is, what does everyone think he means by "more flexibility"? Do you all think it means he will abandon the missile shield?
 
He wants to do something that would paint a bullseye on him from one side of the aisle or another.

So he holds off the paint job until after the election.

Lame duck or not, he can move ahead without the consequences.

The whole "missile defense" boondoggle is just that, and an in yo' face Neocon gesture towards Russia in the first place. It's stupid, and irrationally supported by a lot of stupid Americans who bought into Bush Admin fearmongering & dick waving.

If Europe wants such a thing, they'll build their own.

Have you ever heard of something called NATO? Feel free to google or bing it. When you are done, and learn what it is, let me know what nations are a part of it and if any of those nations are part of the ones building the missile defense system.

If you run into trouble doing this, let me know and I will provide the answers for you. I figure you would trust your own research more than me telling you the exact same thing, which is why I recommend it.
 
It's obvious he's going to give Iran a missile defense system out of spite since he hates Benjamin Netanayu so much.... 🙄
 
It makes sense to delay any action on missile defense until after the election.

If Obama gets re-elected he can shut down the boondoggle and reduce the deficit a bit. Doing that pre-election would be givin' in to the terrists or something like that.

If Romney is elected he will pander to his party and pay off defense contractor backers by keeping the deficit spending to fund it going.

God I hope so. We've spent nearly $100 billion on that system now. It will never work well enough to offset the animosity it creates.
 
This is nothing more than what he is trying to do with Israel and Iran. Tell everybody to wait until after the election, meanwhile Iran continues work on the bomb. Obama is a weak leader without any balls.

I understand Nato, I also understand Europeans haven't really expressed much interest in the boondoggle. If it's on Uncle Sam's dime, they'll take the money. If called upon to pay their share, well, let's just say they're wary of Republicans bearing gifts.

Not to mention an opportunist and a typical politician who puts his wale fare in front of others. I can't shake the feeling that Obama violated every one of his voters. They voted for “change” not status quo or a democrat who seems to be more of a republican that Bush ever was.
I wanted to love the guy but he just fooled everyone. I hated Hillary but she would have been a much better president when I look back on it. The woman has balls.

That was idiotic.

Flapping your balls in someone's face is not how you do politics.

tea-bagging them and have them not only not nitice it, but thank you for doing so is politics.

Stomping around showing how tough you are only works on a smaller scale and against enemies (or subjects) you can easily suppress. Saber rattling on something like this only re-instigates the whole cold war and makes us spend billions on crap we, if we are lucky, will never use.
