I am sure everyone has been there once or twice... how to get an umbrella past some obstacle.

My guess is that he ended up briefly closing it and reopening. If not then he would have to really stretch to do a hand off on the other side of the gate or otherwise try his luck at a short toss.

It must be a VERY slow news day if this makes any headlines.
