Google-enabled government starts with Obama's CTO
But when it comes to IT, the feds are nothing like the private sector

November 7, 2008 (Computerworld) President-elect Barack Obama's plan to build a Google-enabled government began modestly this week with the new Change.gov Web site, which includes the means to apply for a job in the new administration.

One of the people this administration plans to hire: a CTO to manage federal IT. The person selected will be the nation's first chief technology officer.

The CTO position doesn't sound exciting, based on the job description, which may well have been copied from an IT Management 101 textbook. It says the job of the CTO will be to lead IT initiatives at federal agencies and "ensure that they use best-in-class technologies and share best practices."

Kinda hard to believe that there was no CTO for the government up til now.
I give this two thumbs up.

btw I hear Dave is on the short list.

a fall guy to take the blame when email backups "disappear" again? :p

makes sense, though. seems weird that there wasn't already a guy in charge of the gov's IT staff.

You heard right.

By the way I pointed out to them that Professor Dave Farber was the first CTO, a shame Bush abandoned the position shortly after my case.

Didn't they spend a gazillion dollars trying to bring FBI computers into the 21st century before declaring 'Fail' ?

That's probably one of the reasons they decided they needed a CTO.

Linus Torvalds for change we can believe in.

Nice gimmick. But anyone with any real experience in IT/Government knows this is too complex a job. Oh and just having a CTO isn't gonna be enough, Obama better have a couple of billions to back up all the initiatives that will take to revamp the federal IT system.

No, it's really not. I fight these battles on a daily basis, and the primary source of contention is with leadership that simply retains old-world philosophies about how to manage their enterprise. New blood can help support some of these initiatives.

IT is perfectly capable of addressing the vast majority of these problems, especially in the world of healthcare. These companies and government agencies have been running the equivalent of spreadsheet technology for their entire company, and getting them to adapt to something new is tremendous. This will be the primary difficulty in moving forward with this initiative, imo.

I think if Obama can continue to set the stage for this type of reform and give his people the power and resources to accomplish it then we'll see some improvements. I would think we're at least 5+ years away from seeing any real benefit though.

Trust me, if you saw the systems that were currently managing your medical records you'd be a lot more concerned than you would be about Google.

Google has a much greater capacity to protect your medical record than do most of the current vendors in the healthcare industry.

QFMFT from someone who worked in the field, and to this day is prevented by non-disclosure agreements from telling you who has access to your health records.

No doubt. It's frightening, really.

I do a lot of work in the electronic health record space, and the barrier to adoption is always "OMG, we don't want to give people access!" To me, it's the same type of argument we saw with people that were slow to move to ecommerce; many felt that giving your information to a a machine that delivers it generally delivers it to some form of a POS system (and often saved) is somehow more secure.

We'll get there. We have to. The inefficiencies and waste in the healthcare sector contribute to our already high costs, and we need leadership that understands this and supports initiatives to address it.

It's so refreshing to have a President that believes in Science and Technology. We could have had an 8 year headstart had we elected Gore instead of Bush....

No, we believe in small government unlike you Republicans.

I'm not a republican. Nice try though. Also, there is a bit of Irony in your post considering the topic that is at hand. ;)

You're posting suggests that you're a raving madman. Part of the problem in this country is the demonization of each side by the other. And who says you have to part of one side or another? The world is shades of grey, not black and white.
