Obama to expand faith based programs

" President Obama signed an executive order on Thursday to create a new White House office for faith-based programs and neighborhood partnerships, building upon the initiatives started by the Bush administration to administer social services to people ?no matter their religious or political beliefs.?"

Hmm, Im all for churches and the like helping people but have never been a fan of the government having anything to do with religion or vise versa. I guess we will have to wait and see how this pans out.

I've actually never had much of a problem with faith-based programs. I just think its important to have oversight to make sure the funds are actually being used to help the public, as opposed to promoting their ideology.

I'm ok with it as long as you don't have to belong to their church or religion to be employed by them.

Obama is a Golden-rule head. Do unto others...etc. and care for the well-being of thy neighbor...etc. Not the usual brand of crony-ism God stuff designed to buy votes from evangelical lemmings.

Pretty much why the "socialism is evil" crowd goes ape-shiiit. This is the antithesis of Reaganomics-Randonomics bullcrap.

This guy honestly believes in the Golden rule, and he doesn't care who you pray to...

I'm down for that.

Churches should be wary of too much political involvement. It goes both ways imo, The government gets into religion and abuses it, the church lets it and becomes nothing more than a conduit for government ideas. The separation between church and state protects both entities, the church, and the state, and should stay that way.

Well the difference is with Bush it's like having Caligula in charge of an orphanage for girls where as with Obama it's like having Motherr Teresa in charge

The purpose of the "separation" of church and state is so that you do not get things like the Russian Catholic church, an religious institution that is also a state institution. On the other extreme, too much separation and we return to times where the President and the Head of the church on almost equal ground because of the power of morality versus the power of statehood. A certain blending of the two is best, and has been the case for a while now (Churches do not pay taxes, that is a blending, politicians swear on a bible, that is blending ect ect)

As it stands, most charities are religiously backed, that is just the way it is. That is not to say that both the church and the government should be wary of too much involvement (if it gets to the point of congressional oversight for where the church spent monies that is it too far probably.) The government is in the business of taking care of the citizens of the country, and a large majority of those citizens are religious.

I sometimes wish I had started a Satanic organization and applied for govt money.
This would shut down the whole thing.

You apparently don't know much about Mother Teresa do you? Dig a little deeper sometime. You'll see that she's EXACTLY what you hate, forcing people to accept her god in order to get her help.

The hungry don't give a crap about church and state when they're starving. If we are going to support the work of helping other people we are going to have to help the people who do this work. Funny enough, this is generally speaking those lunatic religious folk, you know, the ones who have something of a positive self image and real joy in life because they serve beyond their selves. Hahahahaha, virtue is it's only reward. Too bad for the secular insular self-serving it's such a damn big one.

I don't really favor this, but he did say he wanted to do so all through his campaign. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody.

We had a choice, we made it, and I think it'll work out better overall than the alternative.

Well, the title is a bit misleading ....

If you actually listen to him speak ... From an atheist view point, he brings up good points.

If by "expanding" = opening up the program to Buddhist, Atheist, Muslim ... Basically your X religion here. He is just not gonna give 99.9% of it to the Christians...

What do you expect the guy to say? Down with it all? Let's face it, sadly religion has a big grip on this whacked out nation but at least he wants to be fair about dishing out funds in the pot. That's way better then how bush handled it as far as I am concered.
