It'd be funny if the auto makers just stopped selling vehicles in CA.

I imagine one of the foreign automakers would happily pick up the slack

read between the lines people, the people writing the laws are not idiots, they are harvard law graduates. They are not stupid, just sneaky...
What will this mean? i means manufacturers make cars that meet the strictest standards, and if standards apply to different parts, maybe even go beyond the strictest standard to meet aspects of another, less strict standard...
If the feds made a federal standard that was too extreme, than it would fall through, and there will also be outrage, this way they can have their cake and eat it too.

Great idea! With the auto industry in utter chaos let's hurt their bottom line even MORE. I don't see how this could not increase manufacturers operating costs by a good amount.
You really think Democrats would let the automakers fail? Government will mandate stricter standards and give them money to help meet these standards.

Also, the DOE loaned the automakers billions last year to invest in more efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles.

Can we just call a spade a spade here?

The government can allow this, continue to give them money... hrmm sounds a lot like government run business to me. Maybe some want that but I know I sure as hell don't. Let's not perpetuate this handout business our government has gotten into any more than necessary.

Great idea! When states are going bankrupt, people can't get loans, and cars are expensive, lets increase the cost of driving to satisfy the eco-fascists.

Most people prefer cleaner air and are willing to pay for it.

Yup, and the fossil-carbon-swine have been killing folks kids and only the dumb ones would figure they'd not get upset. If we're gonna torture terrorists in Gitmo, we can roast these pigs too, no?

Am I the only one having trouble distinguishing the emissions standards thread from the condom thread?

Not a fan. Sure, it sounds good to cut emissions nationwide, but we all know that one state is going to go nuts (ex. California). This means car manufacturers will make models that adhere to the strictest state standards, raising the prices for everyone and causing the car companies to dump more money into gas engine research (to meet short term standards) instead of alternative fuel vehicles. This is not a good time to be doing that, given the state of the economy and the US auto industry. With an issue that affects the entire nation, it goes beyond states rights. This is a national issue that requires federal oversight.
