Employers should check prospective hires for history of torts (plaintiff/defendant) also. Imagine if they hired some sue happy person or someone who got sued on a regular basis. It would be bad for thier business!

Yes. No? What? I'm saying it's pretty easy to be a felon, technically, and that it's more often going to be because of something unrelated to a desired position. Marijuana possession? Copyright infringement? I say that second one half jokingly. But yes, hiring actual thieves for your register isn't prudent. They should either take the concept of a felony more seriously or else the consequences of being a felon less so.

What? Do you know the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor? Im gonna guess no.

African americans, please.

What if theyre from Jamaica?

If people insist on dividing our species up lets just call it as it is, Black and white. Technically we are ALL African <insert nationality here> since we all came from Africa millions of years ago.

Millions of years ago? Just how long do you think we've been around?

IF i have 2 applicants. One having a felony and the other clean. Who do you think i would want hired?

some stuff i don't give a shit about. you got busted for shoplifting at 12? you got in a fight in high school/college? silly shit like that shouldn't come up.

A felony? yeah sorry. I don't see how anyone can call a background check racist. that inself to me is racist.

What that says is: don't look at this nice clean cut black male with a college degree. Why? we have such little faith in black males that we think EVERY one has a Felony.

background checks not only show conviction but also any arrests you've had even if the charges are dropped unless it gets expunged.

happened to my gf, someone stole her ID and was arrested for shoplifting. they looked enough alike that the cops arrested my GF for what the thief did. charges were dropped after it was proven that it was the other woman but it still shows up on a background check. she's heading back to texas to deal with it because she's having trouble finding a job here in KC.

That's the message I'm getting too. It's actually quite disturbing when people turn certain things into a race issue.

I'm reminded of a joke Joe Rogan said on his podcast. A guy mentioned "greater and lesser apes" and Joe said "hey, don't be racist :D"
(The joke being that the guy saying greater and lesser was not going to talk about race. Saying not to be racist is a racist thing to say because the person saying it is assuming that the term 'lesser ape' is going to be used to describe racial inferiority)

As long as stats like this exist and employers decide just based on existence of record, then yes.

Look, I give about as much fuck what Obama thinks is racist as I do what Bush thinks is racist. It's just another form of control to keep you distracted from the real problems.

This. I've never done "this" before.

I mean.... Can you really not understand why arrest rates are higher OTHER than perceived racism?????

Ugh we will NEVER work through these issues as long as liberals refuse to step back and look at the problem for what it is, rather than only looking skin deep.

Spatially,

What homer did was show that pot usage among white people was at the same level or higher than pot usage among black people. He then showed that the arrest rate for pot possession was 10X higher for blacks than whites. If you can't see a problem with that, might I suggest you head to the nearest optometrist?

I would like to see the arrest rate the same for both races.... it would end the war on pot REAL fast! When thousands of rich white suburban kids start getting arrested..... the political blowback would be epic!

tbh without reading the article and taking the axis labels at their word, I don't understand why. An arrest for possession is an arrest for possession, is it not? I mean, we could assume that one group is composed of guys with a joint or two while the other group is composed of guys with 20lb bricks of the stuff in their backpacks, but...

There are MANY other factors that could easily cause this - maybe beige-ish and darker people are more likely to be carrying pot, while beige-ish and lighter people are more likely to partake while at home. Could be a cultural difference in the way different races use pot. Could be that certain groups are more careful in the where the hide it.

Maybe beige-ish and darker people were caught doing worse crimes and the cop decided to give them a slap on the wrist with a possession charge?

But no, none of that can ever be discussed. Instead it's much easier to deflate it to simple "RACIST" and then the topic is closed.

I mean seriously, do you think LEOs are just letting preppy beige-ish and lighter kids go who they catch them with weed?

Welll..... duh, YES!!!!!!!!!!! I remember getting busted in college with pot. The cops made me dump the pot in the weeds. That was it. No arrest, nothing. I smoked dope ALL through college, at campgrounds, while driving/fishing/snowmobiling/skiing/concerts. Never was arrested for it and never witnessed anybody else arrested for it. The worst I saw/experienced was mandatory destruction of the bong/pipe/weed.

Cops in general don't care about white kids smoking dope. On the other it an easy way for them to bust black kids. Stats don't lie.

Wow, so no way this had to do with your doing a casual recreational activity? IE maybe a <insert color here> kid skiing, fishing, concerting is less likely to be arrested compared to a <insert color here> kid who is walking through a gated community while peering into garages and casing houses?

Seriously, these constant cries of racism are so ridiculous. I swear most of you have no concept of the 'boy who cried wolf'.... You really need to pick your battles when trying to apply that "RACIST!!!" label to everything you see.

Is he going to relax these standards for military, government, police, mil/gov contractors, Pilots, CDL, or other jobs that the government states require including drug/alcohol screens for employment.

As for the difference in arrest rates, could it possibly be the preppy boys are more discrete in their usage therefore less likely to be seen or arrested?

Lots of us don't live in places and social circles like this forum where every third statement is straight out of a Concerned Citizens for Thurmond rally. We call racism a lot on this forum because there's a shitload of racism on this forum. That doesn't mean we see it everywhere.

STEM nerds are generally a very miopic lot with deeply held, largely unexamined racist and sexist beliefs, so it's not surprising you see a lot of that on Anadtech forums, really. Comes from being largely white, middle class, male, and being trained to see the world in a simple, mechanistic way, I guess. The best argument there is for requiring history and social science breadth requirements.
