Is he not the President of American Muslims also? Do you actually believe any American President would take a different stance?

I thought he wouldn't take any stance on it, as its a local issue. Why take a stance on this issue if he didn't have to? Lose/Lose situation.

He needs to hire better advisers.

Obama on healthcare = fail

Obama on illegal immigration = fail

Obama on WTC mosque = fail

Stimulus = fail

Its like he couldn't try harder to fail

http://www.pollster.com/polls/us/jobapproval-obama.php

He went from a 79 percent approval rating to a 44 percent approval rating = fail

Obama has been in office for 17 months and thus far has failed to accomplish many of his goals. No surprise on his rating dropping. I'm curious, what was GWB's approval rating after 9/11 compared to when he left office?

Also, why would the president of a country founded on religious freedom for ALL take a different position here? It's almost shocking how easily some people can dismiss the rights of those they don't agree with.

I'm saying he should have just kept his mouth shut, now even more people are upset with him. This had nothing to do with the federal government.

.

Because he's not a coward. Of course he could have pandered to the fear and bigotry like that fat POS Newt Gingrich. Imagine that fucker as President? He be checking the polls before ever making a statement.

To the OP
Everything you have said in this thread has made me think he's a great president.

Another unpopular position Obama has taken on an issue. He's on a hot streak!
I knew Hussein Barack Hussein Obama was a Muslim!

I wasn't aware that defending freedom of religion was unpopular, but I don't live in the US so I don't really know the situation down there. It's possible freedom of religion only applies if you're a hardcore creationist christian. Everyone else can fuck right off with their other religions.

Because he's not a coward.

Is he brave, or just a moron. What happened to not pandering and not being a coward when it comes to shutting down Guantanimo? I guess he picks and chooses when to grow a pair?

It is in bad taste for the people to build their Mosque there, but this has nothing to do with what Obama said. He carefully worded his statement so that it represented his view of the legal aspect of the issue. Muslims bought the plot so they have every right to build there. Nothing Obama said was wrong in this instance. Obama did not say that he thought it was a good thing for them to do, he only said that he thought it was a legal thing for them to do.

edit: in this sense, the title of the thread is misleading.

According to the polls, a few other people agree with you too!

“I haven't trusted polls since I read that 62% of women had affairs during their lunch hour. I've never met a woman in my life who would give up lunch for sex.” Erma Bombeck

“The South is dry and will vote dry. That is, everybody sober enough to stagger to the polls will.” Will Rogers

“The liberated man is not the one who is freed in his ideal reality, his inner truth, or his transparency; he is the man who changes spaces, who circulates, who changes sex, clothes, and habits according to fashion, rather than morality, and who changes opinions not as his conscience dictates but in response to opinion polls.” Jean Baudrillard

“Opinion polls measure the public's satisfaction with it's ignorance”

Look I believe that Mosque should be relocated if just for PR for American Muslims (not that it would make any difference to those like you) but I would expect Bush or even McCain if he had been elected to support them... You don't become POTUS by being a fear mongering POS, they leave that to those like Palin and Gingrich.

This sounds so much more reasonable. Of course the media are going to exploit this to the max to make Obama look bad.

You know, if it has nothing to do with the Federal Government and its just local issue, then most people should STFU (Fox News, Newt Gingrich, Republicans in CONGRESS...). It's private property - it might be in bad taste to some people to build a mosque and community center there, but too f*cking bad.

And it's not the "WTC Mosque". It's 2 blocks away. This whole topic makes me sick to see all the people who seem to hate the idea of religious freedom (Why do you hate the Constitution?) - because this isn't the only potential mosque that's being protested in the US.

Wouldn't matter. If he had kept his mouth shut the left would condemn him for silently supporting bigotry and the right would call him a muslim loving pussy anyway. Obama is in a no win situation, as usual.

Shouldn't Obama be worried about more important things like fixing the economy? We're at 10% unemployment. His opinion on the mosque is irrelevant. A whole press conference wasted on a minor issue. Total fail. Get back to work Obama.

I generally don't care for Obama, but don't think he's doing anything wrong in this case. If anything, even if unpopular, he's probably saying and doing the 'correct' thing. I think it could be considered bad taste that they chose this location to build a mosque right now, but they certainly have the right to do so.

This is more about sensitivity to the victims families rather than religious freedom. The people of New York are offended that a group wants to build a mosque where a friend, family member, or coworker was killed by muslim extremists. They would prefer it be further awy from ground zero.

Obama don't need the media to make him look bad. He is doing a damn fine job of it all by him self.
