This isn't really that out of whack for a president nowadays. It isn't like he isn't going to be on the ballot next year, so it doesn't interfere too much with his regular duties. It is best to let the Republican excuses for candidates slug it out in the primaries and make fools of themselves.

Besides, try comparing this to THE ENTIRE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, who have to perpetually campaign on the 2yr election cycle.

Yeah, the GOP has a whole armada of strong challengers lined up - Huck, Trump, Palin etc.

A foolish friend of mine bet me $20 that Obama will be voted out next year and I can't wait to collect it and rub it in his face.

I am sorry but that $20 will have to be confiscated and then Obama will decide if you merit keeping it.

I agree. The sooner the better (but unless he gets impeached) we are stuck with him for another 1 1/2 year or so. A lot of people seem to think that IF he wins a second term, that will be when he decides to attack the 2nd amendment. We all know he is very anti-gun for US citizens.

I dunno. I'm willing to bet that he acted like that to appeal to the Chicago anti-gun nuts. Plus just him by himself couldn't touch the 2nd amendment. He would stir up a very large segment of the population that is typically quiet. Try taking Farmer John's gun away and see what happens.

So wait, we don't even get a solid two and a half years out of this guy before he starts hitting the campaign trails again? There should be laws saying that you can't campaign until at least a year before an election. Maybe even 6 months.
I agree wholeheartedly. Look to our Canadian neighbors and how they handle elections. Our process is a breeding ground for corruption. Imagine the reduced cost of a 6 month election cycle versus an 18 month.

Think of the folks that could run but are excluded because they're not in the well-heeled club.

Many are crying out for changes to our political system. The system we have now with these ridiculously long campaign cycles has got to go IMO. Unfortunately, the same people that make the rules would have to create a law to shorten the cycle. The current system suits them just fine. There will be no change forthcoming.

Additionally, the system as it stands allows for too lengthy a time period to manipulate events for the betterment of a particular party. This is why I like the Canadian system. A vote of no confidence starts an election cycle that is over in a few months.

Maybe Spidey can bring his gi joe dolls to help stop the evil kenyan brown man from carving shiria law into courthouse steps. Good luck wingnuts, at this rate you all will be so lost in the totally batshit insane conservative "clubhouse" mentality Palin will be a shoe-in.

Really? Didn't a lot of people say that about what would happen after he won his first term? :whiste:

But enjoy your wedge issue. Guns, abortion, religion, gay rights all of them engineered to make us fight over dumb shit instead of things that really matter.

Obama starts campaigning for a second term already

According to the article he's just filing his paperwork so he can start collecting campaign contribution. I don't see the "campaigning" you speak of.

This looks odd:

That filing would allow him to begin raising money for the 2012 presidential campaign.

Then it says:

That fundraising already has begun. Obama netted $1.5 million at a Democratic fundraiser in New York's Harlem this past week.

So, he's already started collecting money before he's filed the necessary paperwork to start?

The article doen't make sense to me.

Judging by what he had said in the recent past, and that's all we really have from Obama is a recent past, ya, we are just shocked he didn't.

There's a difference between fundraising for PACs and things like that which will ostensibly be spent on other candidates (but don't necessarily have to be), and direct fundraising for 'Obama 2012' or whatever.

I know Obama has 'Organizing for America' and other organizations like that, I imagine that's what they are referring to.

I'd very much like for him tostart campaigning the minute.....no, the very second he's legally able to, because the guy has a lot of explaining to do on a whole pile of things he's had to either renege or compromise too deeply on.

I believe that POTUS campaign spending in the last cycle ended up being well over $1,000,000,000. I often wonder what kind of programming the networks would be forced to come up with if not given a huge handout every other year in terms of campaign advertising.

They're part of the problem as well, it's in their interest to keep the permanent campaign thing going.
