Stop and think about the culture shock this is going to be for Obama.

We text message for everything now days. What's for dinner? What time you getting home? Wana see a movie? etc etc.

To go from an environment where you send a dozen messages a day to sending none is going to be tough. And worse is the contact he is going to lose with friends who are not in Washington since it will be harder to keep in touch with them.

We should set up a system where he can keep the blackberry for personal messages only, but archive them all, and then use the old system for official business. The President shouldn't have to live in a bubble.

Better for what? Graphic arts maybe... for anything else its simply not true, especially business and security related.

That said, 99% of users just need internet browsing and MS-Office type apps - for that, any modern OS is more than sufficient.
For most home users a Mac is going to provide a much better user experience.

I have both on my desk and I far prefer the Mac to the PC. It is much easier to work on and is more intuitive.

A Senator or a President is only going to use their computer to read and write reports and e-mails so there is no need for heavy duty PC type applications.

Losing SMS isn't that big of a deal. There is the option of using voice. ;)

As for the security angle that's pretty much wrong if he uses PGP and encryption on his laptop... at least for anything sensitive...

Or he might just let it all hang out, leave an honest trail for historians...

Good thing you aren't in charge of security, IT or otherwise, anywhere of any importance.

?They could come up with some bulletproof way of protecting his e-mail and digital correspondence, but anything can be hacked,? said Ms. Owen, who has studied how presidents communicate in the Internet era. ?The nature of the president?s job is that others can use e-mail for him.?

Somebody gets it.

The behaviour of the resident Republicans here clearly shows why the President has to take such drastic measures.

Maybe when they can't stand it anymore and leave the country the President will be able to re-join the 21St century.

One can only hope anyway.

Sorry... Not true. I used Mac OS 10.5 for 2 months and totally disagree. Here is the real deal...

Both are more than sufficient for email, internet and office apps... As far as "intuitive" both are pretty much point and click, a Tie there. It really boils down to what you like best - but dont think that because you like Mac best that everyone does. The market has spoken and vastly likes PC the best.

Agreed on the prez issue. There is no reason to take it away. Its not like he would be dumb enough to talk about national security issue on it... Bush might be that dumb, but not Obama (or McCain or any other candidate for that matter)

Don't count on it. The safety of the President and his family IS a national security issue. Even innocuous little emails and text messages can give away his intended movements, or the movements of his family. How often have most people texted someone to say "let's meet for dinner at _____" or "ok, have fun at the mall!" Even one little slip up by the PRESIDENT can have terrible consequences if the message is intercepted and decoded by the wrong people.

Heck, I dunno how the whole text messaging system works, but there must be a way to track an individual phone's general location and whether it has received a text message or not.

Remember, you're talking about foreign powers and domestic companies with huge amounts of resources that would absolutely love to know what the President is talking about.
