This is a huge landmark step for same sex rights. And Obama did this with just a stroke of his pen. I sure hope gays realize what Obama has done for them here...
To me, same sex rights boils down to two main issues.
Hospital visitation rights and adoption rights.
Everything else as to same sex rights can pretty much be had going the legal avenue.
I.e. financial and property rights for same sex couples.
But a life partner not allowed to visit his/her other half in a hospital ER or ICU, just seemed downright mean and unjust. And it does happen A lot!
As with two lesbians in a relationship, where one has a child from a previous marriage, the other partner has no legal rights over the child if the birth mother should die. Even if the two women raised the child for years and years together in a family home environment. If the birth mother died, the father and or relatives could walk in and take the child. Or worse case, the child services and foster care.
Obama's action at least corrects one of the two outrages. Something I remind you no republican (except maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger) would have ever done. Remember that when McCain or Sarah runs again in 2014. Suck on that tea party...!
