Obama says that he personally believes that "marriage is between a man and a woman" but also says that "equality is a moral imperative" for gay and lesbian Americans. He advocates the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) because "federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples, which is precisely what DOMA does." He supports granting civil unions for gay couples, and in 2006 he opposed a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. In March 2007, Obama initially avoided answering questions about a controversial statement by a U.S. general that "homosexual acts" are "immoral," but Obama later told CNN's Larry King, "I don't think that homosexuals are immoral any more than I think heterosexuals are immoral."

Whats is interesting is if you google this subject you can see the evolution of Obama in regards to this very important issue!!

LOL! He is for "civil unions", which most people on this forum consider something along the lines of a "Seperate but equal" bathroom.

Some people are blinded by their love for this guy......

hopefully he does something about it.

sometimes I feel like I'm a christian conservative in the republican party -- leadership pays all the lip service they want about what's important to me and then never actually do anything about it.

LOL @ what? The 'civil unions' would be a big step forward compared to what we have to day.

Will he bring this about before or after he walks on water and makes wine?

Of course when asked the question during the debates, he answered differently, but then again, that's expected, he's a slimy politician like the rest of 'em.

And some are the exact opposite...

If Obama single handedly saved the economy, captured Bin Laden, ended Al Qaeda permanently, solved immigration, and made us well respected again on the world stage you would still find a reason to hate. Obvious which "some" you are.

Seriously, can you imagine if the Republicans actually were successful at making marriage a constitutional issue? Thank God they're in no shape to try that any time soon.

Government should certify what "legal" marriage is but it should be performed by civil officials. Things like protection of children, inheritance laws, etc. are legit government functions. Legislating morality generally is a horrible idea.
Religious marriage should be completely a religious matter, no effect legally-and no power of the government to tell a church what to do regarding "marriage."

I attended a seminar on this a while back-there are over 500 federal laws that adversely affect gay "civil unions" and this is especially discriminatory in the income tax areas. If all legal marriages become civil unions and the laws adjusted accordingly, I'd be happy.

Sounds like Obama is on the right track here. That so-called Defense of Marriage Act is as repugnant to me as the old Jim Crow laws, and I'm about as hetero as they come.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about the subject. And this is one of the main reasons why I like Obama. He is not an idealogue (which by one dictionary is defined as a "an impractical idealist"). He is for "common sense" and pragmatism and is in the "middle ground".

Just toss out marriage and have civil unions only. Let churches handle the ceremonial part.

This is one of those things which I really don't blame the government for so much but I also agree with you. The problem here is that there are not enough US voters that want the government to stay out of marriage. It is basically a representation thing. You can mostly thank evangelical Reps for that. I believe that time is the only thing which can change that. I will hopefully see it in my lifetime.

Why is it that even when you are on the correct side of an issue, you do it for the wrong reason and STILL come off like a total douchebag?

LOL - I guess its just in your nature.

[edit] or is it nurture? I am not sure if you are naturally like this, or if your parents destroyed your self esteem.

links plz....
Also if you google this issue you will see the evolution of his answer......
The evolution of his answer could be indicative of the facts that he took the time to think about this subject and possibly even deal formulating an answer that would be proper for everyone instead of an answer that was biased by his up bringing??
His own opinion is mildly different, yet as President he represents us all...even those who did not vote for him!!

Peace!!
