The Obama campaign, which is not accepting public funds, has raised more than $468 million. About half has come from small donors, a point of pride for the Obama campaign.

I'm speechless. All of this money that's getting piddled away on an election...this economy is certainly humming along for some people.

It's a sign that people are concerned that if the Republicans win, the economy will not "hum along" or at least not for anyone but the upper classes.

That's quite possibly true.

They've spent this entire campaign trying to prove he is a regular old Chicago style politician and it hasn't worked. Obama has consistently managed to rise above the fray each and every time. Republicans underestimated Obama big time and it is ultimately what cost him this election.

The bottom line is the bulk of Obama's campaign is fueled by small donors like myself. When he gets elected, he will be beholden most to people like me and that is why I am confident he is the best candidate to lead this country out of the mess we are in.

I think it's more that you seem to focus only on the "about half" that comes from small donations and think nothing of the other "more than half" that doesn't.

I mean, good for Obama  but you're blind if you think he somehow transcends politics and isn't indebted to the people who are really funding his campaign.

I don't feel like getting screwed twice once with doubling my taxes and second rate medicare level health care.

What's strange is that I did a quick search on your previous posts and I see some where you claim that cutting taxes on businesses will be a positive for us, because they will hire new people, whatever. Now you're claiming that your business will simply pocket the savings. Why do they do so with health care, but not with other taxes?

Smelling any cognitive dissonance?

The money they save could just as easily be added to your salary (similarly to how you claim would happen with tax cuts), so there you go!

Nice deflection I am sure getting rid of health care would create jobs. The problem is it would either bankrupt the country or those who will end up paying for it. UHC would most likely bankrupt me I can't afford 500 dollars a month more in taxes. And that is the low end of how much it would cost.

Proof on the bolded?

I don't see why that matters if the small donations are unlike what we've seen in the past. IMO the amount of people making small donations to Obama's campaign is an indication of how sick many people are of the current administration.

That about what it costs right now for my current coverage. We all know how shitty government runs things. I am being generous I would guess adding the government would raise cost 50%. Instead of my employer paying that 500 dollars I would be responsible for it.

What it's about is that more and more people realize Democracy is not a spectator sport, and that voting isn't the only play they have. It's a genuine outpouring of support from America at large, rather than just the wealthy few, and it's a very, very healthy development.

So where's that outpouring of support from the Repub rank and file, anyway? Or will they have the people who fund their thinking in the rightwing foundations fund their candidates for them, as usual?

As am I. While it wasn't much it was the first time I've donated to a candidate. It's also the first time I put a candidates sticker on my car window.

Not only does Bush get us in a $4 trillion hole, he and his fellow crooks get to walk away from it all scott free, and much much richer on top of that.

It's impressive no matter how you look at it.

The money is not getting 'piddled away' either, it goes straight back into the economy.

Our current system is already bankrupting us. We have the highest amount of per capita expenditures for health insurance in the world and aren't getting as much health care out of it as people are in other channels. (Perhaps half of the money is going to support health insurance companies, their wealthy CEOs, and an army of administrators and paper pushers.)

Socialized medicine might dramatically increase efficiency while proving to be a boon for businesses and anyone who wants to open a small business. Ironically, it might actually enhance the capitalist elements of our mixed economy.

Why does this FUD always come up? Obama's healthcare proposal is not socialized medicine or UHC. It's mixed economy. If you can afford healthcare or you already get it from your employer, then you won't notice any difference. Anyone who thinks we're gonna have Britain's NHS or even a single-payer system hasn't been paying attention to the issue, because that's not gonna happen.

You really think Obama will have the guts to veto a UHC bill passed by Pelosi? I know McCain will veto that shit but Obama will rubber stamp it. Then we will all be stuck with shitty health care for twice the money.

About the only jobs lost in the healthcare industry would be in the insurance side, not the providers. the same insurance workers who get bonuses for denying treatments that could save lives but since they were denied, cost lives to pad the bottom line of the HMOs. I have no problem with those workers loosing jobs.

Oh look, a broken record.

Pelosi isn't going to have any say in it. She'll be lucky if she's still the Speaker next year. The only health care reform bill seriously under consideration by Congress is Wyden's Healthy Americans Act.

America is going to get health insurance reform no matter who gets elected. It's long overdue. America is NOT going to get any kind of national health care system. That's just stupid FUD.

They wouldn't go away anyway, someone always has to push the papers and review the claims. If it's not for padding the bottom line of the HMOs, then it'd be for saving the government money.

America's health care reform, regardless of who gets elected next month, is going to be mixed economy. Most likely, you will no longer get coverage from your employer, but in a kind of market environment. Yes, there probably will be health insurance ads on TV, just like car insurance. Instead of your employer getting tax breaks for providing your insurance as it is now, YOU will be getting a tax credit for the amount of your premiums. Finally, the self-employed won't be so screwed. Nor will you have to settle for your employer's plan anymore either. You'll probably be able to pick and choose your coverage too. If you cannot afford health insurance even with the tax credit (a relatively small minority), you will be eligible to enroll in the federal system.
In return for this reform that opens up the market for them, health insurance companies will agree to sweeping reforms of their own and new regulations.

So now we're not even talking about your imaginary and wrong numbers based on Obama's plan. Now we're talking about your imaginary numbers based on the arbitrary assumption that Obama's plan won't get passed, but that he will sign some other plan that gets forced on him by Pelosi, who may not even be Speaker anymore.

This is getting better and better. Not only will a democratic congress follow the lead set by the president, only a moderate plan like Obama's has any chance of getting the necessary numbers to pass.

Dream on dude.

I think the appropriate quote is:
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Obama has some how convinced people that he is above politics and lobbyists and that he is some new breed of politician. Reality shows that he is just another politician.

BTW Obama raised $9 million in one night in Hollywood. 250-300 People paid $28,500 each!!! Who do you think has a bigger voice in his decisions, the people who are sending him $50-100 each of the people who paid $28,500??

Think of it this way. In August he raised $66 million, or $2 mil a day. That one $9 million night is the equivalent of 4+ days of fund raising.

Or in other terms. Each of those big donors gave as much as 285 people giving $100 each. So 300 big donors were equal to 85,500 people giving $100 each.
What is the point of this post? ROFL

468 million is a fcktonne. Money talks, BS walks. The people have spoken.
