The big question is how many other Presidents have had a food taster/tester? It wouldn't surprise me if most Presidents had one. To me it's no different than having secret security protection.

The thing I don't get about food tasters is, wouldn't you think that it'd be a fairly simple thing to use a poison that had no strong taste you'd pick up on AND took long enough that you can't practically wait around to see what happens to the taster? Your food would get cold.

For those who actually care, Presidents have had food tasters at least as far back as Reagan (I could not confirm further). They primarily clean the silverware and plates prior to the meal, taste the newly opened wine, and oversea the preparation of the food the president will eat. They sample the food prior to it going onto the plate.

AFAIK, they never were used when meeting with senators or representatives, only when going out into town and other uncontrolled areas. It takes a special kind of paranoia to think Congress is going to poison you.

I think it's normal although I would say tuck fhat and eat anyway, that's not some random restaurant.
