Although the Department of Homeland Security formally withdrew the "no-match" rule Wednesday, the administration is supporting another program enabling employers to check workers' names against electronic records that are supposed to screen out illegal immigrants.

That program, E-Verify, is voluntary for most employers but mandatory for the 170,000 companies holding federal contracts and for their subcontractors. This week, a House-Senate conference committee voted to extend E-Verify for three years.

Boo hoo?

"E-Verify has many of the same problems as no-match," said Chris Calabrese, legislative attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, which took part in the San Francisco lawsuit. Although employers are not threatened with prosecution under the program, he said, thousands of workers are in danger of losing their jobs based on "databases that are not terribly accurate."

So if it is the same program without teeth what is the point?

Kinda like saying that illegals can't get the government option but then not putting in any mechanism to control whether illegals get the government option.

Replacing one program with another that does pretty much the same thing? Outrage not found.

Are there not already laws on the books demanding that illegals not be hired? Are there not laws that punish employers violating the aforementioned laws by doling out fines and what-not?

Wal-Mart was greatly fined for hiring and underpaying illegals. We already have the laws on the books they just need to be enforced.

True

Also, the no-match applied to all employers.

This E-Verify is mandatory to only those that have Federal contracts and voluntary to others.
Therefore others have no incentive either way. No penalties for them hiring and no penalty for not even checking.

If the laws on the books were being enforced, the illegals wouldn't be here in the first place.

Oh yes they would. The government enforces drug laws pretty fiercely and it can't even keep drugs out of prisons let alone the entire U.S.

Seriously?

So you are comfortable with this government database telling employers whether or not you can be hired when you try to change jobs?

You do know this would have applied to all employers and employees, not just the ones with funny accents?

Since you're afraid of Obama you should be cheering that he won't accidentally get you fired.

It's nothing more than a shell game and the administration can keep it up as long as they're in power. Any conservative that thinks that this administration is going to do anything whatsoever that is detrimental to illegals is fooling themselves.

As an example, they deny that UHC will provide for illegals knowing full well that current constitutional law interpretation will not allow that to happen. To prohibit illegals from obtaining health care is deemed to be discrimination. To look at it from another perspective, they are willing to flat out lie to the American people to help ensure passage. They can then throw their hands in the air and blame it all on the interpretation of the SCOTUS. They'll then tell us that, "Well, we didn't intend for them to have coverage, but it's out of our control".

Believe you me, there are many that will buy into this hook, line and sinker.

It all about power. Votes are power.

Edit: Italicized parts are clarifications. I misspoke. Original post is quoted below.

They sure would. The thing is most people try to tackle the illegal problem(yes I said problem) from the wrong direction. We really need immigration reform. This should be the easiest country in the world to migrate to and I want people to want to come here and be Americans. Everyone should.

Ok, I'll bite. How will the constitution not allow that (the UHC denying coverage for illegals) to happen?
