Obama is still doing better than his last two predecessors even with all the economic troubles on his plate. Bush was around 50% popularity this far into his term, Clinton was even lower. Considering what he has to deal with I still think he is doing a fine job.

Hey they are just following the Marching Orders from their Fuhrer, El Rushbo.

Obama could eliminate the deficit, shoot bin Laden in the face, invent a substitute for gasoline made from dandelion milk, and reduce the unemployment rate to zero, and they would still call him a socialist, marxist, communist, secret Muslim Nazi. They have marginalized themselves and frankly the best policy is to pretend they don't exist. They want to hate, not participate, and we should let them.

The "New" American "right" is a thinly veiled front for a sort of white tribalism (specifically white Protestant tribalism). Abandoned long ago- were all the principles that used to animate the right - limited government, small government, state's rights, belief in free markets, and this has been replaced by tribal paranoia and fear.

Now, this isn't to say that this white tribalism doesn't still use the old rhetoric about small and limited government and belief in free markets and liberty and so forth but after 8 years of Bush expanding executive power without a peep from the mainstream "right" in this country - with 8 years of deficit spending and reckless expansion of government programs in all sectors - that the right fiercely defensed as itself being "conservative"- the sudden embrace of the old principles with the election of Obama stand as hollow. It is clear that the "Right" in this country only adopts the old rhetoric as a bludgeon to use against the "other" tribe when they are out of power. They don't seriously believe in the old right values any longer.

This "new" right- so to speak- is defined by white tribalism. The American right today is defined chiefly by their obsequious worship of the military (and the Presidency when in their hands) which they see as one of the last depositories of their "values"- which is odd, because it isn't. See, the "white wing" doesn't care about limited government or free markets or even lower taxes. They are perfectly willing to accept socialism if given to them by one of their own and if they are the chief beneficiaries of it. Their sudden interest in budget deficits again is an example of this.

What they mean by "socialism" is that Obama may give more government goodies to tribes other than their own and that angers them to no end. The New American "right" is not animated by anything higher than rank race tribalism at heart. Their stance on any particular issue is not determined by some sort of coherent ideology - but merely by the principle of "cui bono"- who benefits. They only use conservative rhetoric to bash non tribe members.

If Obama wanted to win the hearts and minds of the "white wing" - or at least a good portion of these fraud conservatives - all he would have to do to advance any particular "socialist" policy is put the military in charge of it. If Obama were to dress up his health care reform officials in military garb and place it under the authority of "Homeland Security" then half the white wing would fall in line.

The American right has become nothing more than a shallow petty tribalism that uses the vestiges of conservative rhetoric to bash their non tribe political opponents. They don't actually embrace or believe any of it. Nothing could better confirm this than when Rush Limbaugh vowed to use the powers of the federal government to "get even" with non tribe members once the GOP was back in power. He didn't want to get rid of any new powers Obama may create or use or abuse - nope - Limbaugh wants to see the GOP use them to the advantage of his tribe - and to attack the tribal enemies. No principlesb - nothing lofty or high - just seething hatred for the enemies of the "white wing.

Any chance we can update the OP?

Hmmmm.... according to this USA Today article, Obama is down to 55% overall, with negatives going up and independents especially starting to see the disaster they helped elect.

His overall approval rating was 55%, the lowest of his young presidency. That puts Obama 10th among the 12 post-World War II presidents at this point in their tenures. When he took office, he ranked 7th.

And to listen to the ATP&N forum I thought america was demanding UHC.

Since April, approval of Obama's handling of health care has dropped from 57 percent to 49 percent, with disapproval rising from 29 percent to 44 percent. Obama still maintains a large advantage over congressional Republicans in terms of public trust on the issue, even as the GOP has closed the gap.

The erosion in Obama's overall rating on health care is particularly notable among political independents: While positive in their assessments of his handling of health-care reform at the 100-day mark of his presidency (53 percent approved and 30 percent disapproved), independents now are divided at 44 percent positive and 49 percent negative.

if his approval rating gets down to 21% then people probably wouldnt be defending him as much ..unless of course the polling method is bogus

So the same thing that has happened to almost every President in history is happening again.

Anyone who didn't see this coming had blinders on.

I don't think Obamas awful, but Congress is. Before any laws were passed they should have gotten a panel of experts and have them assess health care and look at options and their consequences. Screw that, the politicians know best in their own minds which means they know jackshit. If they really wanted a better system they would have worked to get one. Instead its a grab for power and holding onto their seats and the public be damned.

Edit: It is actually a pretty cool tool to compare polling.

From your link:
The six-month mark hasn't proved to be a particularly good indicator of how a president ultimately will fare.

Actually Carter was kicking ass at his 6 month mark... so most presidents 'trend worse than Carter' at this point. Clinton was doing terribly, look how that all turned out.

I'm sure the CBO director's damning revelation about how the Democrats' health plans will run the deficit way up while doing absolutely nothing to slow the skyrocketing growth of health care costs didn't help Mr. Obama's numbers, either.

They are having CBO and other experts assess the laws before they are passed, and incorporating feedback. Nothing has been passed yet, in case you haven't noticed.
