(Reuters) - President Barack Obama's acceptance speech on Thursday night drew the largest television audience of this year's political conventions and ranked as the biggest political moment ever on social media site Twitter.

More than 35.7 million people tuned in on three broadcast and 10 cable networks to watch Obama accept the Democrats' nomination for president, according to Nielsen ratings data.

While TV audiences for political conventions have dropped sharply over the years, Obama's TV audience was only slightly lower from his 2008 acceptance speech, which attracted 38.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

For Republican challenger Mitt Romney's speech last week, 30.3 million people watched on television.

On social media, the number of tweets about the Democratic convention blew away similar figures from the Republican National Convention a week earlier.

What excitement gap?

Idiot, Twitter wasn't even invented till 2006.

Next you''ll see some idiot Obama fan talking about how Obama got more votes in 2008 then he got running for the Senate in 2004.

Love seeing Republicans on here so jealous

I love finding that my suppositions are correct and learning when they are not. That does not mean that what I am right about pleases me. Unfortunately I see a lot of that.

So let me get this straight....more twitter tweets equal greater support. Article doesn't state whether there were more people tweeting or more tweets per person, just a record number of tweets per minute occurred.

Now the real question how many of those who were tweeting will actually get out and vote?

More than half of his twitter followers aren't real.

Just like more than half of the right wingers on here are paid shills...

Don't believe all the negativity on this forum about Obama and this country folks, we're going to vote Obama in again and things WILL continue getting better. The economy is the only issue the right holds up because they know even God could not fix the mess they left behind, but they refuse to admit it happened on their watch and insist that it should be fixed and Obama should take responsibility for it. It is the spoiled rich kid screaming to get their way, once again.

Jealous *and* bitter.

Should they lose, they'll continue to do their damnedest to prevent the govt of the people from functioning at all. Depend on it.

That's really quite lame. The recession of Reagan's era was induced by the FRB to tame inflation. Today's depression is caused by an asset bubble, over extension of credit & inability to pay. It's called a balance sheet depression.

Not that you're capable of understanding a word of that, being emotionally & intellectually predisposed not to, so I post it for those who might.

All you do is fling insults. Grow up kid. Another thing Reagan didn't do was spend his whole adminstation blaming the other side like Obama has done. He went to work fixing the problem. Obama's solution, wage class warefare. It's working great so far.

I'm just offering you the respect you deserve. The notion that Reagan's economic inheritance was anything like Obama's is absurd, delusional, and just plain wrong.

The recession of the early Reagan era was induced by the FRB with high interest rates to tame inflation. When the FRB cut interest rates, the economy grew again. Today's ultra low rates haven't had the same effect at all, because the underlying fundamentals are entirely different.

I hear ya, it's a bad recession, maybe too much for Obama to handle. Maybe a business major would be better at fixing an economy than a lawyer.

Heh. Perhaps, if the business major weren't intent on re-asserting the same policies that created the mess in the first place, just harder & deeper. If the business major weren't intent on exploiting the situation to serve an entirely different agenda, the smaller govt agenda, and if the business major hadn't built his own fortune via a process best described as financialized looting, you'd have a point, maybe.

Yeah we tried that with President Bush...

And he started cutting taxes during wars....

Something that this country has rarely if ever done in the past 50 years or so

It blew up in our faces and President Bush was nowhere to be seen during this years RNC. I mean if it worked so well the first time wouldn't they have had him give a some awesome almost 50 minute speech?

Nice try though.

So now we are blaming Bush for the housing market crash?

Well, yeh, but you see, Bush wasn't a "real conservative", even though his policies were exactly those advocated by "real conservatives" today.

Sheesh. Don't you know *anything*?

I would agree about Bush not being a real conservative, but I also know Bush had very little to do with the housing market crash.
