Obama Declares State of Emergency for H1N1

So, Obama has declared that the H1N1 "Pandemic" constitutes a "National Emergency" and has signed a declaration of the same. This should open doors to local health officials to take appropriate steps to respond to a growing number of reported cases of H1N1. While most will see it as (and it probably is) a good thing, it sent chills up my spine reflecting back on the monstrosity Bush signed into law NSPD 51. This bears a close eye in my mind because of the potential for abuse as well as how quiet the media seems to be about it. National Emergencies aren't exactly routine so it really has me wondering why this is so quiet.

Does thsi mean the Feds will actually disperse the vaccine and not wait until after Thanksgiving?

The level of incompetence by our govt over this is amazing. Even more amazing is the near lack of coverage by the media. We have schools closing for the past 2 months and the feds are sitting on Vaccine. By the time they get around to dispersing it the entire country will have been infected.

According to this, there's probably not much point in even trying to distribute a vaccine at this point.

I'm not aware that the federal government is sitting on vaccine. It was even announced (in case you missed it), that Obama wouldn't get vaccinated until all of the higher risk groups had been taken care of.

What's been clearly communicated is that the vaccine manufacturers aren't producing the vaccine as fast as hoped.

actually the problem is in the 'free market' production, not the government distribution.

It must suck to be at the mercy of vaccine production protocols.

I'm not really worried... in Obama I trust.

According to the link, 65% of the country was to be infected by now and 1/4 sick, with 8% of the country sick this week.

I don't think it's quite that bad. I haven't heard any stats or panicky news reports so I think it's blowing over...

Obama already said that the Swine Flu wasn't "a cause for alarm", so I can't possibly imagine why we're purchasing all these vaccine doses or enacting emergency powers.

There's a Macro here that should post 1 trillion links to Obama saying there was no cause for alarm, just wait a bit, it'll be along in predictable posting behaviour....<whistle>here little Macro Macro Macro....

Swine flu has already run rampant through the Omaha area and it really was more of a ruckus over nothing.

Last I heard h1n1 was going to be like any other flu. Killing about 100,000 ... we have more gun deaths then this. Where is the pandemic and state of emergency for gun violence.

The news these days is almost comical.

So government cannot even deliver on its vaccination obligations/projections but it wants to takeover health care/20% of the economy?

Economic Crisis - Check
Health Crisis - Check
Afghanistan Crisis - Check

You are EXTREMELY naive if you believe this.

I hope you guys are right in that swine flu will not be worst than the normal flu. My great grandfather and 3 to 6% of the world died in the 1918 flu pandemic. I would rather the government make every effort to be prepare for the worst case scenario.

That's because the government doesn't scream loud enough at the chickens ;)

Don't need to look that far back even: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_flu

Interesting enough, the ECDC put out a report that says that 18% of all the deaths from the H1N1 worldwide this year occurred in the past week. Certainly an outlier but a noticeable one if the flu is supposed to start ramping up soon. I think we won't really know for sure how bad the strain will be until we look back. Personally, I'd rather not be where we can say, "Hindsight is 20/20" when we look back.

This is my understanding as well. There are several places in my area that have it (for now).
