contrary to what many people believe, artist do not make much money from album sales. The artists make their income from merchandize sales and touring. What you see here are the greedy record labels trying to hold on to the old business model because they are extremely profitable.
Yeah, it's ridiculous how little artists make from album sales. IIRC like 60-70% of the cost of an album goes to the record labels and retailers/distributors. Sound engineers and other people involved in production end up with most of the rest, leaving a few percent for the artist, maybe closer to 5% if they're a big name in the industry and were able to negotiate a favorable contract. It's an inefficient and outdated business model.
So that's still 5% that you are taking out of their pockets and if what you say is true they can really use that 5%. BTW some of those groups get a lot more than 5%, especially the long established Artists that dictate their own terms or produce their own albums.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a good little consumer so I still go out and buy the albums despite my dissatisfaction with how things are run. For albums from RIAA-affiliated labels, though, I buy them second-hand so at least that way I'm not directly supporting the big labels. No entitlement mentality here, for the most part I play by the rules, but that doesn't mean I have to like them. ;)

And I'd have to do some Googling, but I was pretty sure that even with very good contracts, artists won't get more than 5% or so. I may be wrong, though.

Well bands like the Beatles, Metallica, Foo Fighters, etc have their own studios and such and definitely get more than 5%. Hell the Beatles hardly ever toured and the combines estates of McCartney and Lennon are worth Hundreds of millions. Hell Micheal Jackson was so rich he had his soul transfered into the body of some demented Elf.

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

I may or may not have figured out how to use Napster in my youth. But since I became an adult and matured enough to know that entertainers should be compensated, I have not appreciated the idiots that steal IP. Apparently, Obama agrees.

It also seems that a few of the more rabid Obama supporters are also torrent supporters. Thoughts?

Thoughts? Well, you're trolling and laying bait, while having blood on your hands...

/you are no better than those you'd like to smear....

Actually I was trying to make it clear that I was not trying to pretend that I have never participated in anything like that before. When I was 14 and Napster was the "new thing", I really didnt see anything wrong with it. However, that is the judgement of a 14 year old. I would not be for fining anyone < 18 like that.

Yes it is especially when you consider most of the new music out is barely worth the $1 a song it costs to download. Hell I got the latest Radiohead album for free (they were giving it away) and I still felt I didn't get my money's worth

I see nothing wrong with the court collecting money on a down loaded song. As a direct payment to the artist in the same amount they receive from the recording company. Do they even get a buck an album, say average about $0.10 a song? That would really burn the recording industry.

edit; cut out that damn middle man!

I'll stick with CDs until labels start offering FLAC or WAV downloads. ;)

Although I have bought a few of Amazon's on-sale MP3 albums, I can justify it for a few dollars. I'm not going to pay nearly full price for an inferior product, though.

Yeah I use Ebay sometimes, or swap meets to get some old stuff

But those Amazon 2 buck albums are nice
