They live in deep water and generally only come close to the surface when they are dying. It's rare, but not surprising.

Wow.
I've alway been intrigued by oarfish, I remember when I was a kid I had a Fish of the Gulf of Mexico book and always thought it was the coolest, along with the inkfish (actually a sea slug).

that is cool as hell.
Didn't eat it or try.... too hot (95) for storage and or anyone wanting to pick it up for studies. Thing was breaking up as we were pulling them from my boat. Super soft and weak fish.

you wouldnt expect such a big fish to be so fragile

Heh, probably the origin of some of the legends about "dragons at sea." One guy sees a fish that was "big," and that story gets passed on and done up until the thing was so big that it could eat an entire ship in one bite. Add in the effects of malnutrition or scurvy, or else just good old-fashioned drunkenness, and a 9 meter fish is suddenly a huge monster.

apparently, its reported to swim with a stiff body and its dorsal fin propelling it forward. And I guess its not a really good eat because it has almost a gelatinous flesh (assuming this is describing the meat). Thing is rarely ever seen alive.
Just read up on it. Never heard of the fish before.
Definitely a cool fish. :)
