O Playstation, Playstation, wherefore art thou Playstation?

O Playstation, Playstation, wherefore art thou Playstation?
Deny thy gamers and refuse thy absence;
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my console
And I'll no longer be Annoyed.

Seriously though, I've been trying to get my hands on a PS3 from B&M stores for over a week now. Getting my brother one as I have one. Nowhere has them. Is anyone else experiencing such issues? I know it's certainly become more popular since the price drop but thre Super Wal-Marts, Two GameStops, One Toys-R-Us later I still can't find one.

Looks like online ordering it shall be.

It probably means that it's been discontinued and is about to be replaced by the PS4.

Just kidding. Retailers are trying to improve profits by buying as little new stock as possible after xmas.

There's also a very slight chance that Sony is about to lower the price of the 250 GB model down to $299 and drop the 120 GB model, but there's no real evidence for that besides the retail price of 250 GB drives now being the same as 120 GB drives.

Ok im in Albany Georgia and there is not a single Playstation 3 console or Accessory in any store in this city. All you can find right now are the games. In our local gamestops I asked why there were no consoles and was told by 2 of the stores a similar explanation that was fairly shocking. I was told that playstations are not being shipped to the us right now due to the price of the dollar going down and sales being soo much higher overseas that sony doesnt see a market here right now. Now im 28 and not completely stupid so im not 100% believing what I was told but if there were any truth behind that I would be shocked. What I do think though is that sony is trying to drive the demand sky high and raise the price again. Thoughts?

No, that isn't any more believable than the Gamestop employee who told someone else here last week that the PS2 had been discontinued just because their store was out of stock.

VGChartz isn't a very reliable source but they have the PS3 selling about as many units in the US as the 360 right now. We'll get real numbers from NPD next week.

Maybe try craigslist? I know the local craigslist has at least one guy trying to offload a black friday deal (i think he's asking 365 for the best buy deal, which had ratchet and clank as well as littlebigplanet).

Well I plan on purchasing it next week or as soon as my income tax check hits my bank account but I was hoping to be able to buy it new from a store and be able to take it home and use it that day rather than order it online and have to wait. I trust newegg and have ordered many things from them but with a console since the prices are the same on most everything it would be better to have instant gratification you know what I mean? The only thing I see is cheaper on newegg is the controller prices.

The plan is to buy the 250 gig slim, one of the new Red Dual shock Wireless Controllers, An HDMI Cable, and maybe 1 game. Trying to keep all of that at a reasonable price which could be hard if the prices start to go up.

You'll want to order a $5-10 HDMI cable now from newegg, monoprice, Shop4Tech -- your local store will charge you $20-50 for it.

Newegg has some older games like Dark Sector (a fun shooter) cheap with free shipping.

Get the ps3 from Amazon, as suggested above. Granted you'll have to wait for it to ship, but they have free shipping and no tax added. Depending on where you live that could save you up to $30 (if purchasing the 250 gig).
Also consider this bundle from amazon. Right now it's in stock at $60 but it comes and goes. It gets you a controller (not red, dunno how important color is to you) and Drake's Fortune. Gamestop has the bundle available at select locations, so you could look there as well. It's not the greatest deal, but if you wanted to buy Uncharted it'll save you ~10 bucks. Although it may not ship by time you want it...says in stock Feb. 17th.

Sounds like you blew your chance to educate the gamestop employees about the concept of PPP. I'm sure they would have loved an economics lesson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purchasing_power_parity

Buying and holding inventory doesn't necessarily impact profits. Cash flow, yes, profits no.

So, I got one...today. Well I didn't. My father picked it up. I was at work.

Gamestop got some in. I had given him my card to purchase just in case it did. He purchased the 120GB, Both Uncharteds, an extra controller, Smack Down Vs. Raw and Beatles Rock Band :|

Goodbye $650

$500 was the "bundle" they gave him that wasn't a bundle. He paid $55 for the controller and retail for the games too. Oh well, I'll take Uncharted.
