I'm at a school today and a student comes in to print our her homework. I'm listening to the staff member and the student talk and the conversation goes something like this:

Tch: "Well, I don't know why your homework isn't showing up. What program did you type it in? Was it Microsoft Works? Because that doesn't work."

Stu: "No, I'm positive it was in MS Word."

Tch: "Hmmm - well, what version did you use?"

Stu: "MS Office 2003. That's what we have."

Tch: "Oh, well there's your problem right there. We use MS Office 2000 here and the software can't see into the future.

Me: (blood pressure rising to dangerous levels) "M'am, would you be insulted if I took a look at that?"

Tch: Go right ahead.

Me: (to the student) Ok, well, it looks like the document isn't on your flash drive at all, so you probably accidentally moved it onto another computer. Have you accessed this flash drive on another computer today? (nods) Ok, why don't you go back there and try to find it.

Tch: That doesn't matter - she still won't be able to open it on our system. It's Microsoft Office 2003 and we have 2000. I've been using PCs since they came out and I've never seen a piece of software that has a time machine, have you?"

Me: (hulk transformation, carnage and destruction ensue and then my brain melts.)

THE END

EDIT: for closure

I just walked out. Turned around and left. When I go back there, I'm going to bring a CD with a ton of differently formatted files and leave it on her desk with my card.

Or shit in her shoes, one of the two.

So what happened? Did you tell off the Staff member? Did she find her file? Were you able to print it? I NEED CLOSURE!

Well, she is partly right. Unless the file was saved to be compatible with Word 2000 or below under Word 2003, Word 2000 won't be able to read native Word 2003 files.

LMAO at software not able to see the future.

EDIT: Nevermiind, I was thinking Office XP, not Office 2003.

Where we're going we don't need word processing software. *Flips down visor*

Meh, half of us wouldn't have jobs if it weren't for people like that. Besides, it's not worth stressing over. Stupidity is responsible for a lot of things that are far worse than a misunderstanding of computers.

i have office XP, 2k3 and 2000 here in my office (dont ask, licensing nightmare) and we have no issues at all going between any of them. the owner has 2k3, the VP has office XP and most everyone else has 2000 still. we can all read the owners word files and vice versa. he doesnt save them down either, he always asks me how to do that when he thinks he needs to.

Same here, though we have just Office 2k and Office 2k3 and there haven't been any problems that I have heard anything reported about 2k not being able to open 2k3 files.

Yeah, that was kind of pathetic. Why get so needlessly angry about something so stupid? Yeah, the teacher was an idiot, but that's why she's a teacher and not *working for google*.

Stupid school computers wouldn't open a Publisher 07 file because it truly was saved in a newer file-type. (even tho it was .pub or w/e). I even tried OpenOffice to import it.

As far as I know Office 2000 is fully compatible with documents created by all versions except 2007 & even those can be made to work... at least I've never run into an issue with the apps I use.

Office 1997 however has some issues & is still used by a fair number of people.

This was actually a test from God. You blew it. The perfect nerd opportunity to finally talk to a girl and even look cool possibly was handed to you and you blew it.

Unfortunately Satan gets to take the next stab at it. Your test will take place in a Pawn Shop with a cashier named Zeke.
