before i ask anything, i'll list my setup:

msi kt3-ultra aru mobo
xp1600 agoia stepping with ax-7 hsf with adjustable ys-tech fan
512 true samsung "dtl"
WD 120jb
antec true430 ps
cheiftech case with 4 fans (2 intake, 2 exhaust)
lite-on 16x dvd

ok, i know ppl on this board are achieving relatively high overclocks with the xp1600 chip with that stepping. however, i can only o/c to 150 fsb with default settings. anything over 150, it won't boot, with the vcore at 1.85 and ddr at 2.8, with normal settings. another strange thing, if i cold boot my comp after it hasn't been used for a few hours, i can get the fsb to 160, but that's the only time. after that, it won't post whenever the fsb is above 150. btw, im using an old geforece 2 mx card, until my new ti4200 comes in tomorrow. could the card be the bottleneck of my system? what ram settings is everyone using? maybe it's the ram? sorry for all noob questions. thanks in advance

Since its "DTL" RAM, I'm pretty sure its PC2700, in which case RAM should definitely not be the problem (certainly not yet, anyway) since he's only reaching PC2400 right now. I can't remember if that motherboard has a PCI/AGP lock or not, if it does have one, then turn it on, since you may be clocking your PCI/AGP busses too far out of spec.

some people report having to "burn in" their samsung memory before getting it to run at highest memory settings. you should relax your memory timings or set the bios settings to default to see if you can get your fsb any higher.

the KT3 ultra has an undoncumented 1/5 PCI divider that kicks in at 152FSB.

here is the thread on the MSI forum discussing it with the guy who found it.

http://www.amdforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120537

push it past 152FSB

I'll repost this.. just finished this yesterday.

just recieved my MSI KT3 Ultra board, and XP 1600+. So far I have it up to 1866mhz(177.7x10.5 as per MSI's Fuzzy Logic utility) PR2726(according to Sandra :). will boot up at 1900mhz but not stable with only 1.85 volts(board limit)

Using a ALPHA PAL8045 and a 80mm variable speed fan 26CFM -> 52CFM(auto adjust by temp sensor). temps are at a chilly 35c(bios reading) idle.. 40c(fuzz logic reading) under full load. I didnt see a temp senosr under in the socket, and the board supports AMD thermal diode.. so take the temps as you will.

I think my Corsair PC2400 ddr ram is also maxed at the 177x10.5 FSB.
Have it at cas 2.5 but can still run 4-way bank interleaving. reboots durning tests if I run it at cas 2 at 177.7 FSB or lower any other memory timings at higher FSB's.
I'm going to have to play around.. my mem scores were slightly faster at 170FSB cas2, but cpu wasnt as fast.. will have to see what gives me better real world results..

Been looping 3dmark and Sandra's mem test.

got some quick scores...

3dmark2001 SE (nvidia 29.42 drivers)
8067 w/ Vision tek geforce3 ti 200 (230/465).. damn early model ram.

Sandra
CPU -
ALU/FPU - 5126/2572
Multi -
int/float 10206/11859
Mem test
int/float - 2304/2175 ( was over 2400/2200 at cas2 170 FSB)

Total cost of upgrade $145($77 for MSI board, $68 for 1600+). now that is Bang for the Buck IMHO!!!!!!!!

I'll post my 3dmark link after i get the sound card, and lan card installed.. this was a dirty install.. didnt even re-install windows since it came from another via chipset(kt266 -> kt333) board was to anxious. Maybe my scores will increase after a clean install..

So.. a 466mhz overclock, thats just over a 33% OC not to shabby for an XP. AGOIO(cant remember.. it was def AG something stepping, and i dont see myself removing that alpha to find out.. lol). Doesnt compare to my 1ghz -> 1.43ghz 43%tbird OC.. but not to bad none the less.

"This board has a cold boot issue and it has to do with mem SPD readings"

that solved my problem. i had the settings on "spd" rather then "user." now i can o/c my chip to 160 fsb, but still have a problem at 166. i'm burning in my ram with sandra and hopefully it will allow my ram to achieve higher speeds.

ok, i'm getting pretty frustrated with my setup now. it booted at 166, but crashed (all under default memory settings, and maxed out voltage settings) Now it won't even post at 166. anymore suggestions? thanks

I would recommend burning in both your cpu and ram for a couple days. Find your highest stable cpu speed, set your Vcore to 1.95, and let Prime95 run for at least 12 hours. Make sure your temps don't go over 60 C on-die though. Then try OC'ing some more (you can lower the Vcore at this point).

I've gotten new chips and at first they're often stubborn. After I burn 'em in for a couple days like I described above, they'll often give some more.

Edit: You should be able to hit at least 1750 MHz with your chip, and most likely 1800 or more.

grunjee & others,
i have a abit kr7a, 1600+, radeon 8500, mushkin high performance 256. i can o/c to 157 fsb running stable loops of 3dmark2001 for hours. and i use my computer at the clock right now too. but i can't seem to push it beyond that. any suggestions. i leave my case open for the time being b/c i only have one case fan in the front. it's an enlight 7237 case.

thanks,

not all AGOIA's are the same, can you elaborate on your stepping?
You mean add the manufacture date? I didn't bother to check the date, just the stepping AGOIA and at the moment I have it in a 8K3A@1.75ghz, 166FSB, default Vcore (dips to 1.71v under heavy load but stays solid) with 2100DDR Crucial@167mhz (334DDR) 2.6v cas2 and it's stable, I say stable because I have done looping 3D mark and Sandra burn-ins and crunch SETI 24/7 but I haven't run Prime95 so I won't say "Rock Solid" yet. I did have heat issues using a GC68 with stock 32.5cfm 2500rpm fan as it was getting up to 66c :Q but no stability issues. I changed it with a 50CFM 4000rpm clear fan w/ blue LEDs and it now peaks@57c which is fairly cool for a 5$ Alu heatsink and 5$ fan :) I believe the CPU can see another 100mhz or more but I'll have to switch ram to find out.

How are the nforce (415) boards and overclocking to 166 FSB? Or for that matter, how are the 762 MPX boards (dual processor support) at 166 FSB?

All of you guys are nuts. Please don't overvolt the memory. If PC2700 memory doesn't run at 166 mhz it is not PC2700. Most of the KT333 boards have a 1/5 divider, if you can't run any higher than 160mhz, then it's the CPU.

I was experiencing your problem and here is how I solved it:
First clear the BIOS and do a clean boot.
Go to the BIOS and set the memory setting to 'Host Clock', CAS 2.5.
Save BIOS and boot.
Go again to BIOS and max out CPU volt, but for the AGP and Mem go middle ground.
Set FSB to 166MHz.
Save BIOS and boot.
That should solve your problem.
