O/C'ing ram for P4 S478.....

Need some opinons. I have an older system my youngest boy (12) uses and he's wanting to do more with it like O/C'ing. The setup is:

P4 S478 2.8c
Abit IS7
512mb (2X256) Corsair XMS XLL 2-2-2-5
Seasonic 500W P/S
2X Seagate 80GB 7200
ATI 9800 Pro w/Arctic Cooler
Creative SB Audigy 2 Plat.
NEC Dual Layer DVD-RW
Pioneer CD-ROM

Gaming seems to be not so bad, he's not "real big" into it (MOH, COD, BIA), but the big thing he wants to try is O/C'ing. We tried some this past weekend and the thing will not even post at 205. We relaxed the ram to by spd., nothing would work. it would not post and not even show the SATA drives. I'm thinking this is mainly because of the ram. Am I wrong? I'm thinking about uping the ram to 1 or perhaps even 2GB's......what would be some good ram for O/C'ing this rig? Or, if anyone has some insite as to what else may be causing this......LMK!😉

I personally would not overclock sticks with 512megs total, it's utterly useless given the fact that 512mb is minimum standard for 2005 software environments especially with gaming

check your voltages and make sure the SPD complies with it, don't do automatic settings if the mainboard cannot adjust the memory timings with the volts because you'll get inaccurate results and thus crashes. what was the chipset again? intel via or sis?

The IS7 is an Intel chipset. The board, when new, was a great O/C'er! But then I had different ram, a different chip, etc.. I actually loosened up the ram timings and tried 5:4 and 3:2 dividers thinking that would help but no go. I have played with the voltages on the chip and the ram, but alas, nothing seems to work and given the last chip I used in it when I used it was a 3.2e (Presschot) and had nice O/C'ing results, I have to believe it is a result of the ram..........

Oh and about the 512mb of ram....that's kind of the reason I'm asking what ram I should get that would be a good O/C'er these days with the P4 S478 and IS7 board taken into consideration.

I don't however think that the mere amount of ram (2X256 sticks) would create any problems whatsoever with an O/C....
