O/Cing- Proof that hardware quality matters!

I cannot believe it! I have struggled with my KT7 (non raid) and t-bird 800 for four months now, and have never gotten over 850mhz before it locked at the Windows 98 login screen. Today I replaced my aging Kensington Scroll Mouse with a brand new Logitech USB Wheelmouse and just for the hell of it, tried adjusting the bios multiplier settings.

To my surprise, I booted right up and into windows at 900 mhz. I cannot beleive that changing something as simple as a mouse, can affect a machine this way. I had to post this, now I am going for more...

Im 100% positive it has nothing to do with your mouse. The computer has no way of knowing what mouse is plugged in anyways.

I was just wondering... It has to know something, 'cause it is not connected to a PS2 port, but to the USB port.

Is it possible the old mouse driver just did not like something about the high speed? I have changed absolutely nothing else on the machine.

I am no expert, I was just shocked when this happened.

The mouse driver is irrelevant to the bios and will not cause any o/c instability if the system is stable at default speed.

Abits are renowned for keyboard and mouse port problems, dating back to their LX boards. The ONLY problem I've had with my Abit KT7 (non-RAID) is that the PS2 Rate utility to change the scan rate of the mouse port thinks there's no mouse attached to the computer. Worse, it promptly screws around with the mouse pointer and does random things to the Windows Desktop. Solution? I don't use PS2 Rate. Win98 finds the mouse and uses it just fine, though.

Nope, no joke. I am absolutely serious. I don't know for sure that the mouse made any difference, but suddenly I am stable at 900 when I could go no higher than 850 before. Maybe it is just a lousy pencil job...

The system boots at 10x, but freezes at the Win98 logon screen. I am going to try a different NIC to see if it is related to my cheap NIC.

Otherwise, I am happy with 900.

why don't you put your old mouse back on and see if you can still boot at 900
