O/Cing a 600 K7 Core

I have a 500MHz K7 w/ a 600MHz core and I have a GFD on it now. When I run it at 700Mhz I have to boost the voltage to 1.75v to keep it 90% stable. Only 90% becuz when it gets real warm in my room (from my PC running) it will start giving me errors and crashes. I'm using a "Cool-It Dude! FAK7X2B Dual-Fan Cooler" on a K7M so I did have to move 1 fan up a little. I don't have any way of checking the CPU temp since the board didn't come w/ a thermistor built in. Currently I'm running at 550MHz and 1.6v which it *better* do w/ out probs. since it has a 600MHz core.

So, my question is: Do you think this is just becuz I have crappy kooling? What would you suggest I get for cooling? I've done water cooling on a Socket 7 but it looks like there is more work/time/money into doin' it on these Slot CPUs. Any really good HS/Fan combos?

Also, just curious, but what kinda results have others got from this kinda combo? Could u get the K7M to OC is FSB very well? I'm only able to get 107 outta mine stabilly (sp?).

Thanks for any suggestions and sorry the msg got so long.

How is your case cooling? You may want to add a good intake/exhaust or blowhole fans. I have always ran Alpha P7125 HSF's or Arctic Circles on all of my slot A's. In my opinion and experience with building many Slot A Athlon systems they are the best cooling solution. With proper cooling, you should be able to raise your voltage up to 1.85v with no problem. That will probably stabilize your Athlon to at least 700-750MHz since you have a 600 core.

If your room gets hot, I suggest running an air conditioner if you could since your fans are only as good as your room temperature. I even have to run my AC with my case setup with 2 120mm fans (1 intake, 1 blowhole) 2 fans exhausting from my power supply, and 2 intake fans each on my 2 hard drive coolers. I have my office upstairs, and the room gets hot unless I run the AC.

I *should* have pretty good case cooling. I have a 4 5 1/4, 3 3.5 mid tower (can't think of the name of it 'something' 3727???). I have 1 exauhst + ps and 1 intake. 2 HDD fans (mount underneath it), 2 CPU fans, 1 VCard fan. So I do have a few fans in it. I'm not sure what my case temp is right off hand since I'm at work now. I do start up the AC when it starts getting hot but it just can't make up for it fast enough. :) Where can I get a Arctic Circle HSF? I read a review on the GOrb and it looks like the Slot A vers. sucks, the Alpha kicks its ass. But the "original" Arctic Circle looked like it did a good job, are those still avail.? Looks like www.montac.com went under????

Also, at what point should I be setting my cache back to 1/2? When I hit 750? Not sure what speed my cache is but doesn't it usually go by the core speed?

Your default cache speed is 1/2 right now. It should be good up to around 800MHz, depending on the type of cache chips, but more than likely 750MHz at 1/2 cache. The Arctic Circle has been sold out for awhile, but if you keep your eye open on the For Sale Forum, you could find them. I don't know if this guy still has one or not: Cooler Link If not, just post a WTB (want to buy) and see if someone has one to sell.

Thanks for the info Technonut. BTW, I just got on my computer at home and check the system temp and its 28C right now. Thats also w/ 1 side and the front off so that does make a big diff. I think I need to stop by Radio Shack n' pick me up a thermistor and temp monitor, would help a lot.
