What is this...?

The Enhanced Driver's License is an option you can get in NYS (and possibly other states) that has extra background checks and security features built in that will let you go from the US to Canada and back without a passport (I think it might work for Mexico and the Bahamas, by boat, too).

Why do you need an inspection?

By NY State law, you need to have a safety and emissions inspect on your car every year. I think there are exceptions if you have an older car, but having not owned one, I'm not sure.

My inspection runs about $80 (maybe $40? can't recall if I had both cars done at once...) and registration w/ a vanity plate, -TI3VOM, is about $350 for my 2009 MS3. License runs about $10/yr. You're not doing too bad.

What the hell? Where do you people live? I paid $90 two years ago. lol

Jackson, MS

Are you thinking excise tax?

Nope.

See for yourself:

http://www.co.hinds.ms.us/pgs/elected/tag.asp

Enter a MSRP of 28000
Model Year 2012
Mill Rate of Jackson
Purcase Type - New
Vehicle Type - Car

Comes out to $991.55 . Our local government is corrupt. If I lived the county over it would be half of that amount more than likely.

Yep... choose City of Madison and same info as above. Rideland is cheaper and Madison County school district is much cheaper.

Just paid registration (260$) and license (130$) for the year...

Quebec, Canada... And we have the worst roads in North America, including Mexico. :D

My 2008 BMW 135i is $75 a year in IL. I believe they are going up a bit this year though.

Wow I guess Mass is not too bad, $50 for two years doesn't matter on the value of the vehicle. Are your states throwing in some form of excise tax along with your registration?

Some of your rates seem crazy, registering 2 older cars with insurance and excise I pay less than $1000 a year for all of the fees. (Note I dropped collision because my cars are old enough that it is not worth it)

How much of that was extra for the custom plate? If you register a new vehicle in NH, you could be looking at $600+/yr.

I think my CTS-V is still ~$250/yr in AZ, and that's an 04. The motorcycle is only ~$22, though, and driver's license with MC endorsement was $32 and expires in 2049. :awe:

I know it's extra for the custom plate, but I don't know how much. It used to be $60 for normal plates. I'm not sure at all now.

Last I lived in NY, it was $62.50 per year for registration. Down here in NC ends up being more. It's only $28 per year for registration, but there is a yearly property tax on any car that is registered (works out to about $150 tax every year on my 06 Accord). I know it's not technically registration fees, but I usually lump them together.

There is also an inspection fee in both states that needs to be done yearly for safety and emissions (can't remember what the number is specifically for either state, but it's in the $20 to $30 range).

For registering a new car, both states have an additional sales tax that either needs to be paid at the dealer or the DMV. For my county in NY, it was 7.75%. I believe it's only 3% in NC (they call it a Highway Use Tax, but it is functionally the same thing).

What is this...?

Enhanced Driver's License.

NYS now issues a WHTI-Compliant (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) Enhanced driver licenses (EDL) (includes Enhanced learner permits) and Enhanced non-driver photo ID cards (ENDID) to applicants who can prove U.S. citizenship and NYS residency. An EDL or ENDID can be used instead of a passport to return to the U.S. from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean.

In SC, you pay a yearly registration tax that takes the value of your car into account. That being said, sales tax on a car tops out at $300. Over the long haul, SC gets more money from you...but it seems like a good deal initially.

they already did, its a 100 bucks now for plain or personalized plates(40 extra for first year of personalized) vanity is like double that

its about 200 to register a car/truck the first time.(plus taxes, but our taxes on private party stuff is dirt cheap)

38 for motorcycles

Hah, I was thinking about getting Wilderness plates (MN) when my tabs are up next month. I'm not sure I'm going to drive the car for another whole year because it's old but even Wilderness plates are only $100 for my car. Pretty sure I paid 37.50 last year and that was with a 'new plate' fee.

My car is much older than yours and I bet that plays a part. I'm not sure how MN calculates its rates.

MI goes by original MSRP, Weight would be much better as far as I'm concerned as it would impact road wear.

Not the price of your car new 10 years ago.

AFAIK, NY and NJ are not bad states to own car at all. I lived in MA before I moved to NJ and had to pay excise tax every year on top of sales tax, plus registration and inspection. So even if sales tax in MA was lower than NY/NJ at that time, you end up paying higher tax than NY/NJ more likely over time.

Believe or not, we are not living in such bad states. Let's not complain. lol
