Nyko Intercooler PS3

Just wondering if this is worth getting. After my PS3 YOLD-ed, supposedly from over heating, I wonder if this would help move some more air.

From what i've read they are extremely loud and not worth the money. If your console overheated it was probably due to dust buildup in the console or something internal not being setup properly when it was built.

Were your fans running at full speed all the time before it YOLD-ed?

Nope. Seems to be working fine since it was fixed but now I'm afraid it's going to go again.

I'm talking about the TS by the way, not the clunky old one. I have heard it's loud.

Apparently these for the 360 actually could cause some sort of damage to the power input?

If the fans on your PS3 never went full speed your problem may not have been overheating.

Did Sony fix it or did you do it yourself? Honestly, i'd advise against extra fans or anything like that and if you got Sony to fix it originally just send it back to them if it developers the problem again.

From the reviews I read on Amazon it sounds like both versions are loud. What's considered loud may vary from one person to the next, but I don't think i'd introduce more noise into the equation to address a problem that could potentially be caused by something else. Now, if this was a launch 360 i'd say get all the fans you can. 🙂

Yeah, Sony fixed it.

I figured this thing was useless but I was just curious. Fan seemed to be working normally so maybe there was a defect with the original soldering job. I had been moving it around recently so maybe that triggered it.

Could be. Does Sony have any sort of warranty time for their repairs?

I have a launch 20GB model and the fans will kick into high gear after awhile. I sucked some dust out of it and it seems to do that less often now, but at some point i'm going to disassemble the entire thing and really clean it out. That process seems pretty time consuming from what i've read though. My warranty is already gone since I opened it up to replace the blueray drive but to get to the CPU/GPU fan area you have to dig a lot deeper.

That's the problem with modern electronics. You can't open it to clean the dust out that clogs the fans. That and that damn tin solder. It's garbage. Can we please get a petition to get lead solder back into electronic. Surely we can find some way to keep it our of the landfills if it's that big a deal. 😛

I took apart my 40gb to replace the thermal goop and it wasn't so bad but instructions i was looking at were for a slightly different revision so it took a bit longer. it has definitely helped with noise level.

Any chance you could you point me to the instructions you used?
