Just to give you guys a historical reference.

Actually the word chinamen is from the Chinese word "zhi na ren" meaning a weak and feeble man who kow tows (in chinese its ke tou, another english word derived from Chinese) in front of any opposition.

I assume China is actually derived from chinamen as there is nothing in the chinese language that means the country which remotely sounds like China.

The chinese word for China is Zhong Guo, or the middle kingdom.

As to the song, the reason asians are easily portrayed as such is because in the past (say the 80s), asians probably didn't have enough political clout to really do anything.

Also, many Asians, due to a history of being exploited by their government whether domestic or foreign imperialist, have adopted a mindset of "if I don't make trouble, it'll all blow over" sort of approach.

Thus even in the states, you'll see asian american citizens who have the right to vote but demonstrate no political activism.

uh get your facts straight. china comes from Qin, the guy who united all of china.

was just about to post this.

DON'T WRITE TO THE FCC YOU FVCKING MORONS! Great, give the FCC another reason to step in and pester the hell out of everyone. Free speech, and although this was tasteless and moronic, the FCC has no business here.

This lady is a complete and total moron who obviously has an arrogant attitude toward anyone she feels threatened by. I'd be more than happy to write their sponsors or get it press, but don't write the goddamn FCC.

FCC = No.

Never write them for anything. Ever. Unless you are criticizing them for being pretentious morality cops. You are worse than the idiot DJ if you write the FCC.

I have never heard this interpretation. Regardless, Chinamen does come from the word " zhi na ren".

i think a better theory is that chinamen comes from china + men.

On the website it said Miss Jones and her staff agreed to donate a weeks salary to the Tsunami fund. I'm sure she did it willingly. :roll:

then it would not be derogatory. There is a reason why it is derogatory.

I don't agree or like with anything Miss Jones did or said, but I think you guys are taking it too far by contacting the FCC. I agree with Miss Info; Miss Jones have the freedom of speech to broadcast this hateful garbage. What we should not do is complaining to the government asking for more censorship; instead, we should not listen to this crap, tell our friends not to listen to the station, and let the sponsors know that we are not listening to the station either. This is a free economy, the station won't last a week without their sponsors.

Hot97 plays primarily rap/hip hop. I hope you realize that there is a large majority young asians that listen to rap/hip hop, one of them being me and all of my asian friends. In fact, the last asian college party I went to played nothing but rap/hip hop.

China is derived from the dynasty of Qin, which in the Wade-Giles spelling is Ch'in . Thus that is how you get China.
